Genre/Influences: Dark-electro, body-techno-pop.
Content: Reaper quickly became a recognized project at the wider fields of dark-electronic music. Mastermind Vasi Vallis released outstanding EPs and one successful full length. But the last EP “Dirty Cash” was already released 5 years ago now, and Vasi Vallis continued on with his other bands (Frozen Plasma and NamNamBulu).
“Der Schnietter” stands for the resurrection of Reaper seeing live-member Gregor Beyerle joining in to accomplish this new EP. The EP features 6 different versions/remixes of the title-song taking off by what I would consider as the ‘main’ mix called “Im Club”. The song starts by a surprising, but impressive kind of guitar sampling and a big kick. It’s not exactly what I would call a typical Reaper-track although the melodic tune and multiple sound effects clearly reveal the creative mind of Vasi Vallis.
“Der Schnitter – Mit Der Sense” coming up next is a well-crafted bouncing version, which reminds me a bit of the rough style of early Reaper compositions. The next 2 remixes both are quite logical choices as we first get a remix featuring NamNamBulu-member Henrik Iversen and next a remix by Skyla Vertex, which is another (great) band involving Greg Beyerle. Both remixes can’t fully convince me while the 2 remixes left are more interesting.
First there’s the “Vasi Breaks The Rules”-remix, which is a mix of body-pop, heavy guitar samples and a kind of rap-like of singing. It sounds a bit weird, but I can assure you it really makes sense to inject some diversity in between all remixes. The last version “Im Club Mit Der Sense” is my personal favorite version for its explicit club-vibes and hard electronics.
Conclusion: It’s fine to have Reaper back on track. “Der Schnitter” is a cool song, which will find its way to dancefloors although it’s not exactly the best EP titile-song I’ve heard from Reaper.
Best songs: “Der Schnitter – Im Club Mit Der Sense”, “Der Schnitter – Im Club”, “Der Schnitter – Mit Der Sense”.
