Lou Reed announces 'From VU to Lulu' European tour

The collaborative album "Lulu" which Lou Reed recorded with Metallica will be toured through Europe by Lou Reed during Summer 2012.
The tour will start in Luxembourg on Wednesday 6th June and will land on podia of several festivals, including Switzerland’s Caribana Festival, France's Montereau Festival, Berlin's Citadel Music Festival and Slovakia's Pohoda Festival. Lou Reed will also perform several concerts in France, Holland, Belgium, Denmark, and Germany.

The tour itself will feature a 5-piece band, including Lou Reed, Tony "Thunder" Smith (drums), Rob Wasserman (bass), Kevin Hearn (keyboards), and Aram Bajakian (guitar). The band will perform material from Reed's entire back-catalog ranging from the Velvet Underground to his recent Metallica collaborative album "Lulu".

Ad Inferna announce new 'Ultimum Omnium' album

Out on 6th of April 2012 is the newest Ad Inferna album "Ultimum Omnium". The album of these 'French electronic psychopaths' (that's what they call themselves) will see the light of day on the new DSM Music label.
The album was recorded, mixed and mastered at the Akamaradara Studio. Expect the release to be available on a hand-signed ultra-limited digipack with a poster. Of course there's also a digital release foreseen, a download that is.
We'll air a video clip a few weeks before the release date.

C-Drone-Defect debut reissued as 'Neural Dysorder Syndrom ReduX' 2CD

After the release "Dystopia", C-Drone-Defect present the re-release of their 2001 debut "Neural Dysorder Syndrome" (SPV) as "Neural Dysorder Syndrom ReduX". The re-issue will be released with an extra CD besides the original album holding individually treated mixes, two previously unreleased tracks and the brand-new track "Memento". As a special bonus, you will find the track "I'm not there" - as completely new interpretation of the song "Psycho2VII" done by Ashbury Heights.

The Stranglers announce 'Giants' album

The brand new studio album of the English punk/rock music group The Stranglers is a fact: "Giants". The album is the first since the 2006 release "Suite XVI". A special limited edition of "Giants" will be made available for a limited period and will feature an extra live CD, never before released and recorded at the most recent Stranglers' Fan Convention in November 2011.
Upfront releasing the brand new studio album "Giants", earMUSIC is going to put out two more Stranglers products: the live DVD "Rattus At The Roundhouse" as well as the Unplugged-CD "Acoustic In Brugge" (we were there!). Both will hit the streets on February 10th, 2012.
The Stranglers had major mainstream success with their single "Golden Brown". Their other hits include "Strange Little Girl", "No More Heroes", "Peaches", "Always the Sun" and "Skin Deep". Since their start, they have had various members taking lead vocal: Hugh Cornwell (1974–1990), Paul Roberts (1990–2006) and Jean-Jacques Burnel (1974–present).

18 Summers return with 'The Magic Circus' after 10 years of silence

The legendary dark pop-band 18 Summers (former Silke Bischoff members Felix Flaucher and Frank Schwer) will release their first new album in 10 years. Called "The Magic Circus" it was produced by Roman Schönsee and holds 13 tracks including an intro and outdo, also titled as such. Expect melancholic melodies, trippy beats and deeper lyrics. Out on Synthetic Symphony / SPV GmbH by 23 March 2012.
In case you wonder, Silke Bischoff was originally the duo Felix Flaucher und Axel Kretschmann. After a court case in 2002 Axel Kretschmann obtained that Felix Flaucher und Frank Schwer could no longer use the name Silke Bischoff. Instead the duo had to rename the band into 18 Summers.
18 Summers will be playing live at the Amphi Festival.

The Cult announce new album 'Choice of Weapon'

The Cult have announced their first new album in 5 years. "Choice of Weapon" will be released on May 22nd. You can download a free single entitled "Lucifer" right after the jump.
To be released on the band's new label Cooking Vinyl, it holds 10 in total. "Choice Of Weapon" is the follow-up to the 2007 release "Born Into This". Written by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy, it was recorded in New York City, Los Angeles, the California high desert, and the band's Witch Mountain studio between July and December 2011.
Next to Astbury on vocals and Duffy on guitars, you'll find John Tempesta on drums and Chris Wyse on bass.

Miss FD releases electro-rock single 'Infatuated'

Dark electro artist Miss FD is back with the new single "Infatuated", out on Quantum Release Records. The song is quite a big and daring departure from the songwriting style of her albums "Monsters in the Industry" and "Love Never Dies".
When we heard the single a few weeks ago, we were very much surprised by its sound, which will appeal to a bigger crowd for sure. You'll also get guitar work of Robert Dante served bringing the track completely in the electro-rock corner.

Les Discrets have just released the "Ariettes Oubliées" video clip. "Ariettes Oubliées" is the title track of Les Discrets' upcoming second album "Ariettes Oubliées" out on Prophecy Productions.
The band's Fursy Teyssier had this to say : "We're very happy and proud to share the very first Les Discrets music video with you. It was such a pleasure to make it. Audrey Hadorn wrote and directed it, and it is the first music video she did. We really hope you'll like it as much as we do..."

New Depeche Mode album out by 2013

In an interview with the German magazine Sonic Seducer Martin Gore has confirmed that the new Depeche Mode record will be out at the latest in early 2013 (March, April would be a good guess). The band will be recording the new material later this year.

Out Of Line will re-issue the first 2 Rabia Sorda albums in a double CD set, called "The Art of Killing Silence", on March 2nd. Rabia Sorda is the solo-project of Hocico-frontman Erk Aicrag and with both "Métodos Del Caos" and "Noise Diary" he marked his own stamp on the electro scene. The CDs are since then deleted and sold-out. The recordings that you find on "The Art Of Killing Silence" have been remastered and also include an array of bonus tracks and b-sides plus an exclusive, new artwork.

Kids and Depeche Mode - it does work out

A Depeche Mode tribute video for the song "Everything counts" has gotten some viral love on YouTube thanks to the special line-up of a certain Dicken featuring Milah and Korben. Milah being a 6 year old girl and Korben a 4 year old toddler. Yep, you can't get the Depeche Mode sounds fed soon enough. Although we think there has been some cheating when assembling the video, there seems to be a cut here and there, it does hold the road pretty well. Check for yourself. It's not the first time that this trio has been doing a Depeche Mode cover, almost exactly a year ago the same fan also posted a cover of "Shake the disease" featuring his kids as musicians. Ministry releases tracklist 'Relapse' and DefibrillaTour dates!

On 23 March 2012 industrial-metal pioneers Ministry will release the new album "Relapse" via 13th Planet Records/AFM-Records as Digipack-cd, vinyl and Deluxe Fan Box. The band worked 3,5 months on it and the production was done by Sammy D'Ambruoso. According to Al Jourgensen the album was this time recorded by 2 different "teams" (Dallas vs Los Angeles): Mike Scaccia (Rigor Mortis) and Casey Orr (Rigor Mortis/GWAR) versus Tommy Victor (Prong) and Tony Campos (Static-X). The first official single ("Double Tap") will be released on 24 February 2012.
"Relapse" incorporates elements of thrash, crossover metal, groove metal, angular prog rock, psychedelia and even classic rock. Themes as governmental corruption, untempered corporate greed, addiction and the pain and decay that accompanies sociopathic avarice are the main subjects.

New Talk Talk book 'The Spirit of Talk Talk' & website – register now

L'Âme Immortelle have launched the video for "Wie Tränen im Regen" which was shot by director Carlo Roberti (Solobuio Visual Factory) in Rome last December. Saint Etienne return with 'Tonight' after 7 years of silence

English pop group Saint Etienne (comprised of Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs) have just released their first new material in 7 years. The band posted a video for the track "Tonight" (view it here or after the jump). The track is the first single to be taken from the band's forthcoming 8th album, the follow-up to 2005's "Tales From Turnpike House".
Here's what the band says about the track: "Like the album it's taken from, 'Tonight' is all about the primal and atavistic pull that all good pop music exerts, about how the unadulterated thrill of a great band or gig can sometimes feel like a hotline straight to your heart."
The single was produced by Xenomania's Tim Powell and mixed by Richard X.

The Pain Machinery had a busy year last year with two albums released and numerous live shows done. The band also made a digital album specially designed for the streaming music market, "Digital Surveillance", holding 10 of the band's best tracks taken from "Auto Surveillance" and "Surveillance Cutlure". The album will also be available as download and will be out soon on the major digital music stores worldwide.

Velvet Acid Christ side project Toxic Coma launches 'Satan Rising' album

Out now is "Satan Rising", an album by Toxic Coma, a project from Velvet Acid Christ mastermind Bryan Erickson. Erickson himself has said that Velvet Acid Christ is actually a side project of Toxic Coma and not vice versa. Anyhow, Toxic Coma is a fun project allowing the band to use noises and samples that wouldn't work for VAC.
We're pretty sure that the interview answers wouldn't work for VAC either, read this one for example. Let us know if you managed finishing it.

Front Line Assembly re-release 'Plasticity' single

Out by the end of March 2012, will be a re-release of Front Line Assembly's "Plasticity" single. Originally released in 1996 it only had 3 tracks, namely "Plasticity", "Replicant" and a remix of "Plasticity" by Haujobb. The new version will have 13 tracks and will be released on Infacted Recordings as part of their Classixx Series.
The single is limited to 1.000 copies worldwide.

Front 242 take a break, cancel concerts

This just came in from the Alfa Matrix headquarters. The Belgian electro giants Front 242 have decided not to perform in Europe after the 1st of May 2012 and this until further notice. In a message to the label the band says that they need a (well deserved) break (to start recording a new album as well?).
This however also means - and the band has confirmed this as well - that Front 242 will not perform at the Amphi Festival 2012 in Cologne nor at the Noctural Culture Night 2012 Festival in Deutzen.
In case you think that festivals are to blame, know that the band added: "The promoters of those festivals are not responsible for this decision which is fully on Front 242' s behalf."

System to release limited MP3 player Edition of upcoming 'Evolution' album

Stockholm based electroact System will soon release the early tracks compilation "Evolution" via Progress Productions. The album will not only see a CD format and download release but will also be out as a very limited MP3 Player Edition holding 5 additional tracks. This MP3 PLayer will be out on January 24th.
The "Evolution" MP3 Player will hold a total of 36 songs from the early years of System and will come in the shape of a 2GB MP3 Player, complete with headphones. The release is limited to only 7 copies worldwide and will only be released via Progress Productions Facebook site at www.facebook.com/progresspro . You know what to do if you want one.
In a comment on this facebook threat, Torny Gottberg (Progress Productions label owner) says that each individual MP3 player will be auctioned out. One by one. The money earned will be given to charity.

DeadStar Assembly record fourth album 'Adorned In Thorns', video teaser 'Blame It On The Devil' available

Florida's industrial metal group DeadStar Assembly are currently in the studio tracking material for their forthcoming 2012 release entitled "Adorned In Thorns". The band describes the new music as "the heaviest material we've written to date, very dark and cinematic".
This what guitarist Dreggs had to say regarding the successor to 2010's album "Coat Of Arms": "It is the type of music you would hear in a movie trailer, we wanted to create something that sonically evolved our sound while continuing to deliver undeniable anthems. The German/British trio V2A reissue the 14-track album "Mechanized Infantry" on Noitekk/BlackRain. As a successor to "EBM", "Mechanized Infantry" (originally released in 2009) sticks to the band's roots of pure EBM, brutal 4/4 beats and distorted vocals.
V2A was created in 2002 by 304 (Kevin Stewart) and 316 (Ines Lehmann), and joined in 2005 by live drummer 654SMO (Matt Hawkes). Their debut "EBM" was released by Trisol (2002).

Schizoid release 18-song remix album 'The Next Extreme Remixes'

Blackened industrial digital hardcore metal act Schizoid and label D-Trash Records have just released the 18-song remix album "The Next Extreme Remixes". "The Next Extreme Remixes" is based upon the song "The Next Extreme", the title track of the upcoming Schizoid full length. The song, released online 2011 with a video by Pete O'Hearn (watch it here or after the jump), now gets remixed by the hardcore underground, with a 2012 release of the full album looming.
Remixing duties on this, D-Trash Record's 160th release, are handled by producers from the extreme electronica underground, this disc featuring Monad, Pillhead, Denyss McKnight, Synthetic Freedom Fighters, Not Half, Technicyst Fix, Mysterymachine, Talixzen, Disbreakz, Sadistican, Midi Fister, Needle Factory, Grimpunxxx909, Starpilot, Schmoogg Lebowski, Las Vegas 909 and Mass Hypnotized. You'd almost think they invented all of these band names.

Apollo 440 return with 5th studio album 'The Future's What It Used To Be'

After an 8 year hiatus Apollo 440 resurface with a new full-length album, "The Future's What It Used To Be". The album will get its full European release on January 30th on their own Stealth Sonic Recording label. The release was preceded by the earlier released "A deeper dub" EP released in 2011.
For this first album since 2003, founding members Noko, Howard Gray and Trevor Gray joined forces with long-time collaborator Ewan MacFarlane.
Apollo 440 formed in Liverpool in 1990 and since released 4 albums and did remixes (around 60) for such bands as U2 in the early 1990s to Puff Daddy/Jimmy Page and Ennio Morricone a decade later. Apollo's version of Puretone's "Addicted To Bass" was made a lead track and became a hit in 2002. Among their Stealth Sonic Orchestra remixes are a series of Manic Street Preachers singles.

Saltillo presents OST to Monocyte comic on Artoffact Records

This must be the longest picture we ever used. Anyhow, soon out is "Monocyte", the second CD from Saltillo, the rather gorgeous trip-hop electronic meets violin and cello project from Chicago-based artist menton3 aka Menton J. Matthews III. The CD is the follow up to "Ganglion", which was released in 2006 and re-issued by Artoffact Records in 2011. "Monocyte" is a concept album, and actually a soundtrack to the comic of the same name, published by IDW Publishing. This four-issue bimonthly creator-owned occult action-adventure comic was created by menton3 and Kasra Ghanbari. You can preview this hot comic right here or after the jump.
The CD presents a vision of the Monocyte brand that builds on the comic's energy. Recommended if you like Portishead, DJ Shadow, and Massive Attack. New Tying Tiffany album 'Dark Days, White Nights' + videoclip

Italian singer/performer Tying Tiffany has been very busy the last couple of months. She will appear in the soon to be released Italian movie "Pan Play Decadence" (see the video here or after the jump) and released a new musical side-project T.T.L. (ThroughTheLens) on ZerOKilled Music. With T.T.L. she created together with Lorenzo Montana the trailer-soundtrack "Deep Shadow" for the movie "The Hunger Games" which will be available soon in theaters. End of January 2012 the fourth Tying Tiffany album "Dark Days, White Nights" will come out on the German Trisol label. The new album will feature 10 songs and is a combination of neo-folk, old-school rock, dream-pop and very danceable synth-riffs. The videoclip "Drownin'" - also the first single - has just been released and can be seen here or below.
Expect some tour dates soon too.

Available now is a new behind-the-scenes digital series from DJ/Producer Tiësto, Believe Entertainment Group, HP and Intel Corporation. Yep, no Mac in sight there. "In the Booth" is a new, documentary-style digital series that gives fans an up-close, personal look at Tiësto's life on tour.
Consisting of 10 digital episodes, each approximately 7 to 10 minutes in length, the first video shows him traveling true world, from Las Vegas to Ibiza etc. You can view it here or after the jump.

The Front 242 helmet - it did exist

Oliver Chesler aka The Horrorist is a rather big Front 242 fan and his latest blog entry kinda reflects this more than just a bit. After publishing a post on Front 242, Chesler was contacted by a collector who sent him some photos of what Chesler rightfull calls "a very unique and collectable piece". The object of desire? A Front 242 helmet (originally produced by Racal Amplivox) previously owned by Jean-Luc De Meyer (see picture).
As it seems the item dates from a Depeche Mode concert in Essen/Germany during the Music for the Masses tour where Front 242 were the opener. While Jean-Luc De Meyer only used the basic version of this helmet on stage both Patrick Codenys and Richard "23" Jonckheere wore the version with the welding shield.
For fans only, but still a really nice item to collect!

Austria's pride and joy - and Side-Line darlings - L'Ame Immortelle have started the club promotion for their new single "Banish". A first listening impression of the song can be found here or right after the jump.
The band also announced the video trailer for the song "Wie Traenen im Regen" which was shot by director Carlo Roberti (Solobuio Visual Factory) in Rome last December. You can view it here or - indeed - right after the jump!

Marilyn Manson has a new drummer : Jason Sutter

You'll soon have forgotten that Chris Vrenna ever played the drums with Marilyn Manson. Marilyn Manson has just named Jason Sutter as his new drummer. Sutter previously played as the touring drummer for Chris Cornell, Foreigner, Pink and the New York Dolls and will join the "God of Fuck" tour line-up.
Note that Chris Vrenna was only named as the band's permanent drummer in April 2011 replacing longtime drummer Ginger Fish who departed in February 2011 to join Rob Zombie's live band.
Vrenna completed the drum parts for the band's forthcoming eighth studio album "Born Villain" (set to be released in the first half of this year on Cooking Vinyl), but refused to join the band for live dates.

The Cure to hit the EU road again? - Confirmed

Update: The Cure have now confirmed that they will be appearing at Hultsfred festival in Sweden and German festivals Southside and Hurricane. More gigs to be confirmed.
According to the rumor mill Robert Smith and Co are to had the road again, this time to play some major festivals across Europe. The rumors popped up on the well known Chain Of Flowers website first and hinted at the band playing both the Reading and Leeds festivals in late August and also Pinkpop in May.
While the first 2 festivals seem just rumors, the Pinkpop organizer on the other hand confirmed that there have been negotiations with the band before Christmas and that they have been shortlisted for this year's festival anyhow. Werchter anyone?
Don't expect any official announcements soon though.

Tom Shear's Waveformless Soundware company releases 'Omnisphere Encompass' sound set

Waveformless Soundware, the synth preset business launched last year by Assemblage 23's Tom Shear, has announced their latest soundset, "Omnisphere Encompass". The set consists of 128 presets (critics will surely say that only futurepop and endzeit acts will dig this, but so be it). According to Shear most come with a darker, more menacing edge. This is already the 3rd product launch for Waveformless Soundware after the earlier released DUNE Spiceflow and Vanguard Phoenix.
Shear is best known for his project Assemblage 23, which combines elements of industrial, EBM, synth-pop, and other styles. Over the years, Shear has also produced a variety of other bands, as well as creating highly-regarded remixes for bands such as Wang Chung, Mindless Self Indulgence, Blaqk Audio (AFI side-project) and the Birthday Massacre. Since 2009, Shear has also run the popular electronic musician's blog Waveformless. The blog includes tutorials, reviews, videos, interviews, and "articles of interest to beginning and seasoned electronic musicians alike" as Shear puts it.

Spark! launch new old school EBM assault with 'Hela Din Värld' album

And Sweden has some more EBM on offer these days... Out on Progress Productions by end this month is the newest album from the Swedish duo Spark!. Spark! aka Mattias Ziessow and Stefan Brorsson are a well known product from the EBM old school scene. "Hela Din Värld" (Swedish for "Your whole world") is again written in their native language, quite exotic to many and perhaps also the reason why this acts gets noted in this scene, which is extremely popular in that part of Germany known in the past as the DDR or East-Germany.

Brand new 'Discover' electropop compilation series from Conzoom

Out on Conzoom Records on February 3rd 2012 is the "Discover" compilation. It's the first volume of this new compilation series that will feature unreleased and mostly exclusive stuff from all Conzoom artists. With this release conzoom introduces the new signings to the label like Swedish synthpop band Ostrich, Australian Electropop project The Sound Of The Crowd (a side project of John von Ahlen from the Australian act Parralox), the American electro act Carved Souls and Swedish electro glamour band Cinemascape.

TraKKtor welcome new member and announce 'Blitzkrieg Galaxy' single and 'Halo of Lies' album

The Swedish electro act TraKKtor announce the arrival of new member Robert Lundgren. As it seems Lundgren comes from a Death Metal background and has released CD's with bands such as Plague Angel. He will be taking the place of Tobias Jansson in TraKKtor, playing keys and filling the vacant live guitarist spot the band have had for quite some time.
In further TraKKtor news, the new "Blitzkrieg Galaxy" single will be sent for mastering this week and will be available approximately 6 weeks after this is completed. The single will be digital and contain 5 remixes and as usual be available on all major digital stores. "Blitzkrieg Galaxy" is the first single to be released from the new album "Halo of Lies", due on Katyusha Records for late April or early May 2012. It is the 2nd album for the band, after their "Force Majeure" debut released last year 2011.

VCMG goes Sssssnakish on debut album

Out on March 13th via Mute is VCMG's "Ssss" debut album. VCMG reunites electronic pioneers Vince Clarke (Erasure / Yazoo / Depeche Mode) and Martin L. Gore (Depeche Mode). They joined forces musically for the very first time in over thirty years to record a 10-track album.
The album includes the recent 12" "Spock" plus the next single "Blip".
"Ssss" was written and produced by Vince Clarke and Martin L. Gore, was mixed by Timothy 'Q' Wiles. It was recorded and engineered by Sie Medway Smith and Vince Clarke and mastered by Stefan Betke (aka Pole).

Atomic Neon guitarist Sascha Fahlbruch passes away

Black Rain informs us that Atomic Neon's Sascha Fahlbruch (a.k.a. Trickser) passed away. Guitarist and composer Fahlbruch lost the battle against cancer on 3rd January 2012 weakened by pneumonia. He passed away in a hospital in Essen.
Trickser was only 38 years old. Says the band: "He loved bands like Einstürzende Neubauten, Element Of Crime, EA80 and he had a deep love for Country music. Trickser was known as a free spirit and a profound thinker - he wrote poems and books!"
Rest in peace Sascha.

Mind.in.a.box announce video teaser new 'Revelations' album

The Austrian electronic music act Mind.in.a.box have revealed a video teaser for their 5th album "Revelations". "Revelations" will be released in Europe on January 20, 2012 by the new label Dreamweb Music and in North America on 24th January by Metropolis Records. The new disc counts 10 tracks and can be previewed right here or after the jump.
"Revelations" was originally intended for a 2010 release just after "R.E.T.R.O." which was released early 2010 on Dependent Records. The band in the end finished the album in January 2011 and then searched for a new label to publish it after their contract with Dependent Records ended.

Das Ich singer suffers and conquers severe brain hemorrhage

Good news from the Das Ich camp at last. Back in June 2011 we reported that the frontman of Das Ich, Stefan Ackermann, was seriously ill. In a message to Sonic Seducer Bruno Kramm now says that things are looking quite good for the singer.
Bruno : "It's almost a miracle. When we first got the bad news, it looked as if Stefan would not survive his severe brain hemorrhage. Stefan has however seen a great progress in his recovery and after an intensive rehabilitation he is much better now and can move himself, speak and participate in normal life."
The final 10% of Stefan's full recovery seems to be quite demanding however, but according to the band members it's just a matter of time before Stefan will be the old one again. They do seem to be pretty confident as the band plans a first stage reunion at the end of 2012. A first rehearsal with the band is scheduled for April at Castle Cottenau.
Side-Line wishes Stefan lots of strength in these next few months.

Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails 'told' woman to burn the house down

That must have been an industrial fire. An American woman has claimed that both the music of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails inspired her to burn down her parent's house. C. Paz, 29, poured flammable super glue on a bed in one room before lighting it, and then entered another room to set fire to the curtains. The arson took place at her father's home in Cileo Vista in Texas on December 27th 2011 last week.
The woman, who clearly has some psychological problems, told the Police that she wanted to burn down the house as revenge on her parents, who she believed were trying to kill her. She said she learned this through messages hidden in the music of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails.
It's not the first time that industrial bands are named in criminal cases. The German electro act Wumpscut was mentioned in the 2008 Matti Saari murdercase for instance, while Manson has previously been linked to the 1999 Columbine Highschool massacre. Needless to say that these these accusations were ridiculous and false.

PiL frontman John Lydon blames X Factor for not having found a record label sooner

"If you want to know why PiL don't have a record label, look at 'X Factor'." That's in short what John Lydon gives as an explanation for Public Image Ltd. (PiL) not being able to secure a label deal sooner. The frontman added that he and his band had found it hard to find a label they wanted to work with "because the music industry is unwilling to take a risk on artists who "strive to break barriers". We are quite sure that many dark wave labels are open for discussion though, (or would the demanded advances be a bit too much?).
But, the band would now be very close to signing with a label. "This Is PiL" is expected to be released in the first half of 2012 and will be the band's 9th studio album. The band's last studio effort already dates from 10 years ago when they released "That What Is Not".
In the past John Lydon claimed that the band was forced to tour extensively to raise enough money to record the album. And that's not all, even butter came to the rescue and the occasional scrapbook.
In further news, PiL will be reissuing their entire back catalogue in 2012.

Spiritual Front back on tour + 'Odete' video and single

Spiritual Front, the five-part neofolk act from Rome, are on the road again taking them to Russia, Germany, Ukraine, The Netherlands, Finland, Estonia, Poland, Austria, France and Italy. Since their formation in the late 1990s they have been bringing what they themselves label as "nihilist suicide pop" or "mafia-folk" (due to the origin of the band in Italy and their general association with folk genres).
The band originated in 1999 as a project fronted by the Italian guitarist and singer Simone Salvatori. The band's most recent album was 2010's "Rotten Roma Casino". Taken from this album is "Odete", the third single from "Rotten roma casino" so far. The video was freely inspired by "Odete" (2005), a film by portuguese director Joao Pedro Rodriguez. Why do Amazon, Fnac, etc sell illegal DVDs in large quantities ? Part 1: the EU

(Picture by Soundonthesound) - After the Depeche mode live 1982 DVD debacle (yep, we screwed up big time here, and our sincere apologies to Mute for this hasty & lousy job), we decided to check into the distribution of these DVDs, which according to the labels of said artists are illegal, but which are spread in large amounts worldwide through various mainstream distribution channels. Here's a first part concerning the distribution of these items in Europe.
The catalogue that these companies carry is rather huge. You will find titles by Coldplay, Depeche Mode, David Bowie, Metallica, Devo, Dire Straits, The Doors, Franz Ferdinand, Bryan Ferry, Peter Gabriel, Massive Attack, New Order, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, Oasis, PIL, Lou Reed, Slipknot, U2 and so on and so on. And these DVDs get sold by thousands at Mediaworld, FNAC, Amazon and companies alike worldwide.
Headliner - and other companies - have been releasing live DVDs of famous acts for years now and so far without running into problems with GEMA or artists or labels. Why? Our guess was that these dodgy labels found a kind of niche in the law, that allowed them to release such live-DVDs. But was it the case? We went talking with Alexis Ewbank, a specialized lawyer regarding this matter.
Alexis: "There are actually two possible reasons that these live recordings are still available on plenty of sites and have entered the mainstream distribution channels so easily. Either the concerned labels and bands just didn't bother until now (editor's note: it's still the trend in music land that being bootlegged means you are also 'important', hence why some labels even give certain companies the right to publish bootlegs, but that's a whole other story and is not of application here as the concerned labels did not give their ok for these DVD's to be spread.).
But the second reason is something which is probably the case here. There's a ruling regarding free distribution of goods inside the EC that says that when a product has been distributed in one country without any problem that ii no longer can be stopped from being distributed in the other 24 EC member countriess. Add to that that in the past especially one country had/has a very bad judicial ruling when it came to author rights: Italy. Italy indeed had/has no decent legislation regarding this matter or at least is less protective when it comes to author rights regarding musicians. So once a live DVD can be distributed in Italy it can also be distributed elsewhere in Europe. On top, to make it even more complicated, these companies will often pay mechanical rights but not the performers rights."
We are also checking - via an American specialized lawyer - into why these releases also pop up on US based retailer sites. More info as we get it.

Carter Tutti Void to launch 'Tranverse' on Mute in March

Out on March 27th via Mute is "Transverse", a unique collaboration from Chris Carter & Cosey Fanni Tutti (Throbbing Gristle) and Nik Void (Factory Floor). The release will be available as vinyl, CD and download.
Transverse is a unique collaboration, created especially for the legendary Short Circuit presents Mute festival at the Roundhouse, London in 2011. The tracks were prepared in the studio and then performed and recorded live in front of an audience. Outside of the trio, these recordings were unheard prior to the festival and the popularity of the performance left many being turned away at the door (including 2 of the 3 Side-Line editors present).
The album is made up of 4 parts:

And there is more good news, it seems Mute plan a series of releases from Short Circuit presents Mute at the Roundhouse in the near future. More details to follow.

Alter der Ruine call it quits and torpedo brand new releases 'Son of a Bitch' and 'Thereʼs Always One More Son of a Bitch' on the way out

Yesterday we already alluded (via Facebook) on the fact that it isn't too smart from a band to call it quits when new material from that same band is still being promoted or will be promoted soon. And we stand by this remark. Why? Because many shops and possible buyers will simple not bother investing money in a band that is no longer. A dead band does no interviews, does not tour, doesn't do anything really. And it surely doesn't sell (not all bands have that Michael Jackson aura).
The pertinent remark was not really welcomed - to say the least - by a bunch of readers who accused us of attacking the band. We were not attacking the band, on the contrary, we are questioning the marketing disaster surrounding their decision. On top, the only party getting the blame is the band's label, which is unfair to say the least.
The affected label now has to work under pretty difficult circumstances to get these very releases promoted and sold. Releases which if they have the same quality as the previous Alter der Ruine release s might well become so-called pearls for the swines due to the current circumstances. A pity, the band's music deserves more than this.
The way some seem to be unable discussing this and other things on our fora without calling people names and or exploiting this to have their own agenda forwarded is striking. Or as one reader put it eloquently: "The loud minority spoils it for the silent majority." For those that seem to have forgotten, Side-Line has always defended the rights of bands and labels. In some cases the labels went way overboard, in other cases it were the bands making silly decisions. Not being able accepting that this is possible is a complete lack of reality sense and a very one-sided point of view.
Here's the press release that NGP released concerning the end of Alter der Ruine:
"First off we are very shocked and surprised about the latest developments concerning Alter der Ruineʼs decision. I am not going to speak for the artists but rather speak on behalf of the label and NGP's stance with their decision. As we are aware that people have a lot of questions as to why, NGP feels that question should be left to Alter der Ruine to answer and when they are ready.... they will. We fully support our artists and will uphold the integrity and decisions Alter der Ruine makes concerning their future artistically and personally. NGP and ADR have a great working and personal relationship that we cherish and trust. We will still be releasing "Thereʼs Always One More Son of a Bitch" as scheduled and with no interruptions including singles and remixes in support of the album.
Micah and myself, as you know, are artists and are both in bands as well so we can relate to changes and adapt to them quickly. One of the statements we have made earlier at the beginning of NGPʼs "reboot" was that we promised to be ﬂexible while maintaining artistic freedom and integrity. We stand by that statement while providing the support our artists request. We are both proud and humbled to share and be a part of these memorable releases from Alter der Ruine and in our opinion, the best releases from these great artists.
On a personal and positive note I believe "nothing is forever", so with that said letʼs make the best of whats now and show your support for "Son of a Bitch" and "Thereʼs Always One More Son of a Bitch" and for the future of Alter der Ruine, Negative Gain and ALL of our music. OBEY THE NOISE!

Nitzer Ebb singer Douglas McCarthy announces new solo project for 2012

Nitzer Ebb frontman Douglas McCarthy returns with a new solo project of which so far only a short video turned up online, "Untitled". On douglasjmccarthy.com you only get the sentence "Life is sucking the life out of me". A release and tour are scheduled for 2012 but no more news is known so far, we'll keep you informed.
It's not the first time that McCarthy goes solo. Apart from writing and performing with Nitzer Ebb, McCarthy has also appeared on recordings by Recoil and has released material in collaboration with DJ Terence Fixmer as Fixmer/McCarthy. He has also contributed vocals to tracks by Die Krupps, Motor, Kloq and Client.

After planking and owling, there's now goths up trees

(Via Wire To The Ear) - There's a new Tumblr blog out there called "Goths up Trees" which holds - what did you expect - photos of Goths in trees. We're not sure if it is an early April Fools joke or a real new meme project. But if interested to climb the trees, don't hesitate to submit a photograph of you right here.

For those who have missed the planking (and owling) memes, planking (or the 'Lying Down Game') is an activity consisting of lying face down in an unusual or incongruous location. Both hands must touch the sides of the body and having a photograph of the participant taken and posted on the internet is an integral part of the game. Many other versions have existed since, including owling, which is sitting as an owl on a chair for example and having a photograph taken of you.

Depeche Mode live DVD 'Feel you (Live 1982)' to be released? It's a bootleg

Update: Mute has confirmed that this is an illegal DVD and that the label is in no way affiliated with the label or the band. We advise you not to buy this release as it seems to hold a rather poor video copy. You can also read some background on how it is possible that these kind of products are spread in this article on illegal live DVD distribution.
Out on January 27th is the Depeche Mode live DVD "Feel you (Live 1982)". The DVD will see a release via the bootleg Headliner imprint which in the past released plenty of live shows on DVD from The Cure, Devo, Peter Gabriel, Massive Attack, PIL, U2, etc. This is NOT an official release and it strikes us as weird that we got this news offered via official distributors. We are still awaiting an answer from one of the distributors.
The material on this DVD was filmed at the Hammersmith Odeon in London 1982 and features all the classics from the first two Depeche Mode albums "Speak and Spell" and "A Broken Frame". The format of the DVD is NTSC all regions, 4:3 Fullscreen. Dolby Digital 2.0+5.1.

Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan announces 8 cd's with bonus material for 2012 reissues

While Smashing Pumkins' original line-up will never reunite (according to Billy Corgan), that same Billy Corgan announced on Twitter yesterday that he (and the label) are considering around 8 cd's worth of extra discs for the album backcatalog reissues this year.
In the meantime Corgan and co are working on "Oceania", the band's ninth album. Tentatively scheduled to be released on September 1, 2011, the release date has since been pushed to early 2012. "Oceania" is a part of the band's ongoing 44-song concept album "Teargarden by Kaleidyscope".

New Order MOJO tribute 'Power, Corruption & Lies' - Listen now

The U2 cover tribute that Q Magazine released is not even (c)old or here's another UK magazine launching yet another tribute. This time it's Mojo which is releasing a full fledged New Order tribute CD of the band's 1983 classic release "Power, Corruption & Lies", by far the band's best studio effort ever. The New Order tribute CD comes with the new issue of Mojo and can be ordered right here as well (worldwide).
Among the band's on this tribute we also find Norway's finest Biosphere next to S.C.U.M. and a string of lesser gods. Mojo has posted 30-second samples of each track, you can hear these right after the jump, or here for mobile users.

Dead Can Dance re-confirm new album and tour

In May 2011 we posted that Dead Can Dance would return for a second reunion album and tour. In the months after that we heard that Lisa Gerrard was already in Ireland working on the new album. An album which should be completed by the summer of 2012 followed by an extensive two month world tour in late 2012.
The first part has now been re-confirmed by Dead Can dance in a New Year's post on their Facebook saying: "2012 ! We have started working on the album and the World Tour is taking shape....we will be announcing news in the coming weeks !"
Dead Can Dance already reunited in 2005. During that reunion and tour they released limited-edition recordings of 13 shows from their European tour, and 8 recordings from the subsequent North American tour, as well as a compilation titled "Selections from Europe 2005". These concerts were recorded and released on The Show record label. It remains to be seen if the band will repeat this procedure but it looks like it.

Proyecto Crisis to release 'Made In Remix' CD next week

And the winners of the Side-Line Awards 2011 are...

The final results for the Side-Line Awards 2011 are in! Over the past 9 days you could vote for a bunch of nominated bands, releases, labels and magazines. Votes were counted by using the Facebook like button. That generated a total of 14,451 votes and roughly 200,000 visits to all the pages concerned, from the actual main voting page and the many satellite pages that were made for each selected artist and/or band. The high number in visits is explained by the high number of repeat visits from the people who voted to see how good/bad their choice was doing.
Congratulations to all bands, labels and magazines involved, the fact that you were chosen by our readers to be nominated in the first place already shows your work is being appreciated a lot. And here are the winners:
Best Band: the best band was - according to our voters - VNV Nation. The band literally beat the crap out of all other contenders. Only IAMX and Front 242 were able following Ronan Harris and Mark Jackson but the duo still collected over 1000 votes while IAMX got stuck with 826 votes, which still is an amazing score.
Best Album: the best album was - according to our voters - VNV Nation's "Automatic" which again amassed over 1000 votes. It's a stalinist score as the only contender getting closely was IAMX with the "Volatile Times" album (700 votes).
Best Newcomer: the best newcomer was - according to our voters - Virgins O.R Pigeons. Both we and the band's label Alfa Matrix were surprised by their nomination in the first place (they aren't really newcomers to begin with strictly speaking) but the band winning this 'best newcomer' award is crazy. Note that the band is still to release their label debut, but apparently the scarce Virgins O.R Pigeons tracks available are sufficient. It makes the demand for an album rather urgent and wanted. Second was Analog Angel followed by DarkDriveClinic which recently put out an excellent debut.
Best Single: the best single was - according to our voters - Combichrist's "Throat Full Of Glass", followed by Rammstein's "Mein land". Together they took more than 1000 votes home.
Best Label: the best label was - according to our voters - Metropolis which got 431 votes followed by a draw score between Alfa Matrix and Out Of Line. The 4th place was for Mute. Note that Metropolis has close to a monopoly on the US market while the EU market is more fragmented with lots more labels being active here, scattering the votes over more labels (who often originally release many of today's releases before licensing them to Metropolis). Nevertheless, Metropolis is the definite winner here. Congratulations!
Best Live Band: the best live band was - according to our voters - surprise, surprise, VNV Nation. It means that the band won no less than 3 awards this year. Also here they left the competition miles behind with Front 242 stranding at not even half of the +1000 votes that VNV Nation assembled. 2011 was the VNV Nation year and it shows in various other polls of shops and magazines which add the band in their Top 3 releases for last year.
Best Print Magazine: the best print magazine was - according to our voters - Sonic Seducer. Their German Blitzkrieg was absolute with 403 votes compared to 114 for Orkus and just 93 for Zillo. Gothic Beauty defended the honor by reaching 277 votes. One remark here, we were contacted by quite a lot of readers asking why we still bothered on having a poll on print magazines 'since nobody buys print magazines anymore'. That might be true but fact is that for many bands it still is being considered an honor being featured in a tangible magazine.
Best Online Magazine: the best online magazine was - according to our voters - Side-Line. We got 707 votes while our nearest contender got 191 votes. The other mentioned online magazines got just a very small fraction of the votes. Thank you for your trust, it's much appreciated!
Best E-shop: the best E-shop was - according to our voters - Amazon, they got 549 votes. Music Non Stop got 171 votes while Infrarot got 112 votes. It shows how Amazon has picked up quite some audience from the industrial scene, not in the least because most of the products from the main labels in the scene are also available in the Amazon store, both as download and as physical product. Next year we will split up the votes here between downloads/streaming and mail orders to get a better view here as well.
Is this the definite rating of bands and releases? No, it sure isn't. As you all know this popularity contest could be pushed by everyone nominated or voted for in the final round via Twitter, Facebook etc. Close to every band, magazine and label involved did contact their fans to vote for them on Side-Line, although it remains to be seen if these fans really voted for the one they got the mailing from in the first place. We know at least one case of a band which asked its fans to vote for them, but they saw the votes for other bands being boosted instead. It shows that being a 'fan' is quite relative sometimes.

DM Baar in Tallinn (Estonia) - THE Depeche Mode bar in Europe

(Video by Karel Van Isacker, photos by Bernard Van Isacker using the Hypstamatic iPhone app) - "Never underestimate the popularity of Depeche Mode in Eastern Europe. Anyway if you've always wanted to get pissed with a bunch of strangers and sing along to 'Enjoy the Silence' then this is the place for you." That's how Estonians describe their very own DM Baar in Tallinn, a bar that only spins Depeche Mode (related) music, every day of the week, from 12 till 4 and that also harbors a club night.
DM Baar was originally opened in 1999 and has since received regular visits from Martin L Gore, Andy Fletcher, Alan Wilder, Dave Gahan, Christian Eigner, Anton Corbijn and so on. The bar is at its current location since september 2009.

Since I'm spending New Year's Eve in Tallinn, Estonia this year, I decided paying a visit to said bar to see with my own eyes what all the mayhem was about. It surely wasn't exaggerated, the bar breathes Depeche Mode in every corner - even in the toilet - as you can see in some of the pictures below. Every wall is covered with pictures taken at the bar, tickets, memorabilia, design elements and so on. A lust for the eye of the black swarm.

Here's a detail of the ventilation, mark the 'Bong 13' inscription, adding a 'strangelove' effect so to speak.

When we enter, it's just past 12 AM and the Depeche Mode live video "The World We Live In and Live in Hamburg" is aired on two screens. In the half hour that passes several other people enter the bar, order a drink and listen to the Depeche Mode live material, needless to ask them what kind of music they prefer. I ask a baileys to the bar tender and jokingly tell him that I'll stay unless he starts playing stuff from after "Ultra". He smiles.

I buy a t-shirt for one of our female correspondents and make the below video in the main section of the club, the bar.

Recommended if you are paying a visit to Tallinn and at least a place that will make you feel 'at home'. Of course, industrial purists hate Depeche Mode and should avoid this place like the plague, so I was told. Open minded music fans will enjoy this place big time.

2011 has been a turbulent year for Side-Line, editorial changes, new opportunities that you will see develop in the year to come, our mobile app hitting through the roof (cross platform we have reached 16.000 downloads - that includes both the old app and the newly launched one that replaced the old one in the Android market), our first Facebook compilation being a massive success, the Side-Line Spotify playlist, ... The list is endless.
From what we know that is on our agenda, including a new Facebook compilation, it will be a hectic 2012 as well. But it will also be a great one! So, this is the song we choose to end this year. Watch it after the jump.

Brand new Collide song 'Intruder' included on 'Underworld: Awakening' soundtrack

Out January 17th, 2012 is the "Underworld: Awakening" sountrack. On this 17-track disc we not only find back The Cure, Evanescence and Lacuna Coil but also Collide next to other industrial/darkwave acts such as Ministry and Combichrist.
In "Underworld Awakening" Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrioress Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.

Coming January, 2012 is the "Naiades" book and CD by Faith and the Muse singer Monica Richards. It's the 2nd solo album for Monica Richards after the 2007 release "Infrawarrior" and it comes accompanied by a 32 page hard cover book, full of exclusive art.
In this video you'll hear sound bytes from the forthcoming album, view pages from the book itself as well as some clips from Monica's live shows, upcoming videos and some of the backing film from her performances.

UPDATE: The article from Side-Line on the coverartwork was censored from Facebook after a few disgruntled Side-Line forum members flagged the article link on Facebook as being impropriate. Time to block a few morons...
The artwork for the new Wumpscut album "Women And Satan First" is on the streets. Rudy Ratzinger posted a censored poster on Facebook and it reveals 3 nude ladies (in all kind of physical quantities) and a nude satan. One thing is sure, there will be more than a bit discussed about the rather lovely artwork. Mission accomplished, we'd say.

The album - expected for an April release - will again be available in various formats, the main being the Satan box set, the regular CD and the DJ Dwarf disc (limited to just 500 copies).

Freakangel announce new 'Let It All End' album

A new Freakangel album is in the making for the beginning of 2012. To be released via Alfa Matrix the album will be titled "Let It All End".
Here's what D. Darling has to say about the release: "It will be out next year. Content of the album is based around destructive emotions. I think it is my hardest work so far... No, really! I mean... everyone always says so, but I have never done anything like this. I am very proud of the results we have been able to achieve on "Let It All End". I have been working together with Art who is responsible for composing almost 50% of all music on the album. That's why this album is going to be very hard and very heavy!"
Hailing from Estonia, Freakangel brings a mixture of aggrotech, industrial, dark electro, while also leaning towards rock and alternative music styles. The new album will be the band's first new studio effort since 2010's "The Faults Of Humanity".

Praga Khan goes ghostbusting with Zak Bagans from Ghost Adventures

While Olivier Adams (Lords Of Acid, Praga Khan) created an own label (Zuix Records) to produce singles from reality stars (such as Astrid & John Bryan), his colleague Maurice Engelen has teamed up with Lords Of Acid fan Zak Bagans, an American ghost hunter for a brand new album. The album will be released around April/May and only in the USA and will feature Bagans 'talking' to ghosts.
Zak Bagans is one of the people behind "Ghost Adventures", a weekly American paranormal television series that premiered on October 17, 2008 on the Travel Channel. The program follows and stars ghost hunters Zak Bagans, Nick Groff, and Aaron Goodwin, as they 'investigate' locations in and around Virginia City, Nevada that are reported to be haunted. Ghost Adventures will enter its sixth season in 2012.

After the 10 most read news items on Side-Line in 2011, we dove back into the Google analytics stats of Side-Line to gather some data on which reviews were the most read ones in the past 12 months.
Much to our surprise, there were several that were actually 2010 releases. Does this mean that 2011 was a less fertile year? Or were the releases just not as good? Or... were some of these releases only now picked up by a bigger crowd?

We dove into the Google analytics stats of Side-Line and gathered some data on which articles were the most well read ones in the past 12 months. We deleted those that refered to the Side-Line Facebook compilation and awards, because 1) they took the first 7 places and 2) they benefited from reposts, which explains point 1, it would not really have been 'fair' including them.
Over the past year we welcomed 6.116.520 visitors (that doesn't mean unique visitors). Our servers realised it very well...

Deine Lakaien prepare new acoustic tour for May 2012

The German darkwave band Deine Lakaien will be back on tour in May 2012. You can expect an acoustic set from Alexander Veljanov and Ernst Horn. The news was announced on the band's website together with a few concertdates for May plus the first festival appearance.
There is no sign of a new album, what would be the band's first since "Indicator" which was released on 17 September 2010.

Encyclopedia Gothica, a book presenting the goth band family tree

Out now is "Encyclopedia Gothica", a book written by Liisa Ladouceur. Liisa: "The book is a guide to Gothdom, from Absinthe to Zombies, with an emphasis on the music. We made a Goth Band Family Tree for the book, tracing evolution of the style from its punk and industrial roots through death rock, synthpop, EBM, darkwave and many more."
Inspired in part by the tree in Metal - "A Headbanger's Journey" - and the "Map of Metal" site you can also find an interactive web version with a sample snapshot of the tree.

Space nazis attack with a Laibach OST - view the trailers

Now this promises to be a fun movie featuring on top a soundtrack by the Slovenian industrial music group Laibach. Iron Sky is an upcoming science-fiction comedy film around this plot: as World War II comes to an end in 1945, Hans Kammler and other German scientists make a breakthrough in anti-gravity research. From a secret base in the Antarctic, Nazi spaceships are sent to the dark side of the Moon to establish the military base "Schwarze Sonne". Their plan is to build a powerful fleet and return to conquer Earth. The film is set in the year 2018 when their descendants finally return.
For those who enjoyed the Norwegian "Dead snow" this is a must.

Noisuf-X offers unreleased cut 'Open Window' as free download

It's free download time everywhere so it seems. As a little Christmas gift Noisuf-X offers the unreleased song "Open Window" which you can download here.
Noisuf-X is X-Fusion's side project. It can best be described as power noise, though it also contains some breakcore and technoid influences. The last Noisuf-X release was this year's "Dead End District".
On a sidenote, more and more videos are getting posted on YouTube showcasing how fans dance on industrial music. You can find a demonstration of a fan dancing to the "Chaos" track by Noisuf-X right here or after the jump.

Detroit Diesel is a French Canadian harsh EBM duo, founded in 2006, signed on Deathwatch Asia and Infacted-Recordings. The first demo, "Dancing with Terror", was launched in 2008 with the song "When Darkness Falls" appearing on the popular "Endzeit Bunkertracks IV"CD set release by Alfa Matrix (order it here). Soon after they got signed.

Nocturna Festival 2011 (Barcelona) DVD in the making

To be released next year is a DVD about the Nocturna Festival 2011: "Document DVD". Available now already is a mini doc video on this fine Barcelona based festival. Included is live material from Faderhead, Soman, Culture Kültur, Terrolokaust, Killus, Viktoria Modesta, XPQ-21, Sergio Delirio, Blackout and Minerva Pons.
The recording was made in la Salamandra de Barcelona on Halloween.

Chaos All Stars release a neverending cover album starting with Depeche Mode's Enjoy The Silence

Swedish electro/EBM/alternative music act Chaos All Stars are to release of a cover album that is neverending: "Neverending Coverage". Indeed, this is an album that has no limit of tracks but will instead be growing as time goes by and whenever they feel like doing a new cover. The album contains covers chosen, performed and produced by Chaos All Stars of some of their favourite songs.
The album is released on a distribution license for almost anyone to redistribute for free (as long as they take responsibility for the distribution, meaning that the covered artists get mechanical royalties). Any profits are to be donated by the distributors to charity. Chaos All Stars explain: "We want to offer these cover songs to the widest possible audience! We cannot of course do this with any release we do but we feel that we as artists have the rights to choose how we wish to distribute our recordings and this time we wanted to try a new angle."

Bryan Black and Oly Grasset, who together form the act MOTOR, have shifted gears and recorded a song-based vocal album entitled "Man Made Machine". The first single also titled "Man Made Machine", features the vocals of none other than Depeche Mode's Martin L. Gore. Apart from the original extended version, there are additional remixes by Black Asteroid, Radio Slave and Chris Liebing available as well, but you'll probably will be best of with just the one-tracker.

Out now on Infacted Recordings is the Suicidal Romance album "Memories Behind Closed Curtains". The album features collaborations with Pete Crane (SHIV-R) and Felix Marc (Frozen Plasma/Diorama) as well with Ad Inferna. A pre-album digital single "Whisper Goodbye" was released in September already.
For the Estonia based act this will be the 3rd release after the "Love Beyond Reach" and "Shattered Heart Reflections" albums.

British dark electro-pop trio Nedry announce new 'In A Dim Light' album with 2 advance tracks

London UK's dark electronic trio Nedry announce the spring 2012 release of their sophomore album "In A Dim Light" worldwide via Monotreme Records. In anticipation of this release, two album tracks, "Float" and "Post Six", are available today to stream/download right here or after the jump.
The 2010 debut album "Condors" of the Nedry trio saw them being recommended by BBC Radio One, The Guardian, Uncut and Q Magazine. The follow-up "In A Dim Light" will be available worldwide March 12, 2012 on Monotreme Records. Available on CD and digital formats and as a 180 gm vinyl edition of 500 on black (200 copies) or white (300 copies) vinyl with a free CD of the album and a free 12" x 24" poster.

TECH-TALK: Thomas Rainer (Nachtmahr, L'Âme Immortelle)

We live in an era where music is produced on computers with programs as ProTools / Logic / Cubase / Reason / Ableton Live / ... Some artists prefer analog synths above digital, some stay their whole career loyal to the same brand. Nowadays keyboards and technology became much more easy to use and cheaper for the masses.
We had an exclusive talk for Side-Line with some of the most important musicians of the electronic scene about the gear they use to compose songs and to perform live on stage. From today on we will publish every day a new interview with such bands as The Neon Judgement, Vomito Negro, Wumpscut, Pouppée Fabrikk, Monolith, Vive La Fete, Frozen Plasma, Haujobb, etc. Step with us into the studio of your idols and discover how your favourite tracks were produced and which equipment was used for it! How cool and interesting is that?
Thomas Rainer's history as a music producer goes back to as far as 1997 where he laid groundwork with his band L'Âme Immortelle and he is currently setting dance-floors aflame with his latest project Nachtmahr.
SL: How long ago did you buy your first keyboard ever? Which technology did it use and do you still own it?
TR: The first keyboard I bought was a KORG Trinity Workstation in 1996, before that I was using a KORG 01W and KORG M1 but these were borrowed. The double sound generation system (ACCESS: PCM-based / MOSS: Virtual Analog) make it a really flexible synthesizer and I still love to use it up to today when a track calls for one of it's signature sounds (especially bells, noisy leads and pads)
SL: Which computer(s) and software do you currently use in your (home)studio?
TR: Intel i7-960 Quad core, 3.2 Ghz with 12 GB RAM, running Win 7 and Cubase 6 as a DAW
SL: Can you describe all synth gear and hardware you use nowadays? Which piece is the most valuable for you?
TR: I still love and use a lot oft he virtual analog synths I bought over the years, especially the KORG Z1, which is one oft he most underrated synths of its kind in my opinion. Furthermore there's my trusty KORG Trinity and KORG MS-2000 I use a lot. The tendency goes more and more towards using software synths though, as modern fast processors allow for an amazing sonic quality and makes them hard to distinguish from the real counterparts. On the Software side I love Spectrasonics products like Omnisphere and Trillian as well NI Battery and Massive and Sylenth.
SL: When performing live, which keyboards and software do you use on stage?
TR: As we are travelling long distances by plane with the band most of the time we had to make our setup as compact as possible. Therefore we use MacBook Pro's, a KORG Kaoss pad, a Roland SP-404 and CME M-Keys and M-Audio Axioms as controllers. Softwarewise it's all Cubase 6 running on Bootcamp and the soft synths needed for the individual songs.
SL: According to your opinion, which are the most legendary synths ever produced? Some examples: Yamaha DX-7, Korg M1, Roland Juno, Roland Jupiter, Roland D-50, Oberheim OB-8, Moog Minimoog, E-Mu Emulator, Access Virus, Kurzweil K2000, Quasimidi Sirius, ...
TR: It's really hard to say but more it's definitely the KORG Trinity as it really shaped me as a songwriter and I wrote 3 L'Âme Immortelle and 1 Siechtum album only on this Workstation without any additional equipment. As funds were very limited at that time you had to be very creative with what you had. On a more global scale I would say the Roland JP8000 as it's responsible for THE saw lead sound as well as Minimoog for basses and the KORG MS-20 for it's amazing filters.
SL: And which are according to you the biggest synth artists/bands ever?
TR: Easy. Kraftwerk!
SL: Share with us the worst case scenario that ever happened to you live on stage or in the studio!
TR: I was visiting a friend in Hamburg and parked my car in the parking garage oft he apartment building. After a few hours we came back to grab lunch just find my car broken open. They didn't steal any of the really expensive synths out oft he trunk, but my backpack that accidently contained the 3.5' disks that had the KORG Trinity project files for a whole L'Âme Immortelle album on them! So I had to start from scratch. One year of work down the gutter, but since that day I make double back ups of everything.
SL: The unavoidable question: do you prefer analog or digital synths more? And what's your opinion about the virtual analog concept?
TR: It's hard to give a general opinion here. Both concepts have their advantages and disadvantages and so there's only the best one for the job and not a global winner.
SL: Isn't the digital technology evolving too quick and becoming too complicated for artists nowadays? Today you discover a new instrument and before you have time to explore it completely, an improved (and cheaper) successor is already available...
TR: I try to stick with a few selected instruments for as long as possible and don't even bother trying or buying every single piece of new equipment that becomes available. This also leads to a certain trademark sound, which is also very important these days.
SL: How will the future of creating electronic music look like?
TR: It will be pretty bright in my opinion, in general - not in "our" scene. It will always be 10 years behind what's really going on where the big boys play.

Ambassador21 side-project Suicide Inside signs to Alfa Matrix

After announcing the signing of the Aghast View side-project Aesthetische, the Belgian label Alfa Matrix has now also announced the signing of the Ambassador21 side-project Suicide Inside.
Born in 2005 in London, Suicide Inside is the second project of Natasha and Alexey Protasov, both well-known on the electro scene for their Ambassador21 project.
You can expect a mix of complex hard electro with industrial break-beat and harsh female vocals.
With 3 full-length albums under their belt ("Theory Of The Arising Of Desire", "Learn To Swallow" and "Dead Red") and multiple concerts across Europe, the duo has now joined the Alfa Matrix family for the release of their 4th studio album entitled "Homicide". Expect "Homicide" to be released in early 2012.

Neon Electronics to release 'Keylogger' album end of January 2012

Dirk Da Davo, one half of the Belgian electronic outfit The Neon Judgement, is back with his solo project Neon Electronics. Out on January 30th will be his newest album "Keylogger". Released in a joined operation between M-Tronic and Dancedelicd, you can already listen to a few songs, right after the jump or here.
The release will coincide with a few concerts including January 28th, 2012 in Cannes (France) at the Electro Industrial Festival. Next are February 10th, 2012, Zichem (Belgium) at Den Hemel and May 17th, 2012, Ghent (Belgium) at the Charlatan club.

Kim Ljung fans release 'Under a migraine sky' tribute

Industrypeople, the official Zeromancer fanclub / street-team / online and offline community has come up with one hell of a project. 'To bring the fans closer to the band, and the band closer to the fans', they have organized a tribute compilation with 15 bands/artists from 9 countries, covering 15 Kim Ljung penned songs. Aptly titled "Under a migraine sky" (Kim Ljung suffers from severe chronic migraines) this disc is not officially released and only spread on around 100 copies. It is not for sale.
The bands and artists involved in the project are Rho, Vandring, Nicomancer, Julia Beyer (Chandeen, ex-Technoir), Mønoton, Sinistema, Canaan, Oddity, Contranzor, White Noise, Maija Luotonen, Room 204B, ottoegil, _smh and red7.

Aghast View side-project Aesthetische signs to Alfa Matrix

Fab Viscardi and Gui Pires, the 2 musicians behind the most successful Brazilian EBM export to date, Aghast View return with the side-project Aesthetische. This new material comes after almost 8 years of silence (!) since their last release as Biopsy and Aghast View. Old-scool EBM fans will be pleased with this material that offers a less is more songwriting attitude, mixing the old EBM aggressive feel with modern sounds for a very clean type of hard-driven electronic music.
The project's album "Powerswitch" will be released in 2012 by Belgium's electro label Alfa Matrix.

Out on December 31st is the new Goteki EP "Disco muerte one, under desert stars". The album will be offered as a free download via http://goteki.bandcamp.com .
This will be the first of four free remix EPs. This first collection of tracks includes remixes by cutting edge electro-house band Versus YouthClub, EBM stars Kant Kino, legendary video games guru Graeme Norgate (as Vi Rez), and a Moroder inspired disco anthem by Apoptygma Berzerk. The 6-track EP covers industrial, folk, disco, Detroit house and ebm. Not bad as far as diversity goes!
Future EPs in the series include remixes by Aesthetic Perfection, Ultraviolence, Aaimon, Kovary, Beaumont, Method Cell, Kanji Kinetic and Inertia, as well as new tracks and mixes by Goteki themselves.

Reissue Hybryds album 'Soundtrack for the Antwerp Zoo Aquarium'

Out now is the reissue of the long-deleted Hybryds "Soundtrack for the Antwerp Zoo Aquarium" album. "Soundtrack for the Antwerp Zoo Aquarium" was created especially for the 150th anniversary of the Belgian Antwerp Zoo.
The music was composed by Sandy and Hermann (of Ah-Cama Sotz) and was woven in between the sounds of dolphins, killer whales and the noise of the underwater world.
Originally released on Daft records back in 1995, it now sees a second life on the Zoharum imprint.
