Genre/Influences: Experimental, abstract, dark-cinematographic, ambient.

Content: Skymme is a project, which takes me back in time. Far away from current technology and modernism we here welcome the duo from The Netherlands, which has released their first cassette to date. Can you imagine the cassette format is still alive!?

Well, that’s precisely what pleases me as Skymme reminds me of real underground music. The project consists of Peter Johan Nÿland and Bert van Beek. They both are experienced artists in experimental music while they now joined hands to release this 2-track cassette.

“Huone” is characterized by experimentalism and minimal-minded sound treatments. It sounds pretty dark and mysterious. The title track is an interesting exposure of this band’s approach. The kind of slow rhythm makes it all more accessible although it clearly remains an extreme sound experience.

“Kraton Kosong” is the B-side track, which sounds more ambient and clearly cinematographic-like. There’s no rhythm running through this track while you will notice a rather psychedelic touch and some abstract sound treatments.

Conclusion: This debut work reveals a real melting pot of influences and different sound sources while globally speaking it all sounds pretty experimental and ambient-minded.

Best songs: “Huone”.

Rate: (DP:6)DP.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
