Genre/Influences: Electro-Pop, Wave-Pop.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl.

Background/Info: Marva Voulgari and Theo Foinidis are back on track unleashing their second album. After the promising debut work “Dream Within A Dream” it took them three years to achieve the new album, which has been released on Wave Records.

Content: The sound of the Greek duo remains pretty intimate, mixing elements of Electro/Wave-Pop and a few more influences together. There is still a kind of Cinematographic element, which I previously described as ‘Ambient-Pop’, but the work also features some D’n’B passages. The work remains driven by Marva’s sensual timbre of voice, which sometimes is reminding me of Lana Del Rey.

+ + + : “Afterglow” is an elaborated and accomplished production from a band with a very own sound and style. It will for sure appeal to Electro-Pop lovers, but the sound is much more than this. The vocals remain one of the duo’s main strengths, which is mixing sensuality and sensibility.

– – – : I didn’t get a similar sensation of magic as at the debut work. I’m missing a few highlights, the album featuring easy listening songs, but maybe not true potential hits.

Conclusion: Relaxing and dreamy, sensual music with a dark touch on top.

Best songs: “Room Of Doubt”, “Forever”.

Rate: (7).

About Marva Von Theo

Marva Von Theo is an Athens-based electronic pop duo formed in 2017 by Marva Voulgari (vocals, piano) and Theo Foinidis (synths, production), both classically trained musicians. The self-released debut album “Dream Within A Dream” was reviewed on Side-Line in August 2018, and the duo followed it with the digital singles “Embrace This Madness” (2019), “Ruins” (2020), “Love” (2021) and the three-track “The Electroacoustic Session (Live At D. Tragkas’ Atelier)” (2020).

“Afterglow” appeared as a download on 26 February 2021; Discogs dates the CD on Shades Of Sound to 23 March 2021, with a limited LP edition, and Side-Line announced the album as a Wave Records release in March 2021. The eleven tracks are “Love”, “Forever”, “Ruins”, “Embrace This Madness”, “Dissolve”, “Older”, “Room Of Doubt”, “Somewhere Safe”, “Bittersweet Sunday”, “Forgotten” and “My Moon”. Foinidis produced and mixed the album and wrote four of the songs alone, Voulgari wrote two, and the pair co-wrote the rest; Yannis Markopouliotis recorded the vocals and George Priniotakis mastered the album at Artracks Studio, Periklis Liakakis took the photographs and Barbara Panagiotidis designed the artwork. Videos were issued for “Ruins”, “Love” and “Embrace This Madness”.

The duo has opened for Trentemøller and Hooverphonic and played Release Athens, Linecheck in Milan, Nocturnal Culture Night and the Athens Digital Arts Festival. The single The Woman I Left Behind (May 2025) previewed the third album “We Were Never Lost”. “Afterglow” is the duo’s second album and second Side-Line review.
