VNV Nation postpones festival shows and cancels Unity Festival dates as Ronan Harris recovers from back surgery
VNV Nation postpones four European festival shows to 2027 and cancels its Unity Festival dates in Oberhausen and Berlin after Ronan Harris had back surgery.
VNV Nation has postponed four European festival shows to 2027 and cancelled its Unity Festival dates in Oberhausen and Berlin, the band announced on 14 July 2026. Frontman Ronan Harris had a procedure to fix a problem causing severe back pain and now needs time to recover and undergo physiotherapy.
The Castle Party show in BolkĂłw, the Amphi Festival appearance in Cologne, the Unter dem Himmel festival in Thale and the Klaffenbach open-air are all postponed to 2027. New Thale dates are confirmed for 31 July and 1 August 2027, with Klangstabil and Ductape added to that bill. The Unity Festival dates in Oberhausen and Berlin are cancelled outright, as assembling that lineup is not possible for the foreseeable future due to other commitments among the participating bands. VNV Nation’s December shows in Hamburg and Chemnitz are not affected, and no dates after October 2026 are impacted.
Ronan Harris on the surgery and recovery
Harris describes dealing with severe back pain intermittently for over a year before its cause was identified. “After a string of specialists, theories and scans over the last 12 months, the very elusive cause was only discovered very recently and I had to have an operation last week to fix the problem,” he stated, adding that waiting risked being in agony onstage and causing further damage. His specialist has told him recovery will take several weeks, running alongside four months of physiotherapy. “I also want to finish an album that’s been interrupted too many times. I can focus on a goal of coming out of this better than before,” Harris added.
The back procedure follows a separate health issue Harris disclosed in December 2025, when he underwent vascular surgery that later led VNV Nation to postpone its April-May 2026 North American tour dates for follow-up tests. That postponement did not affect the band’s European shows at the time.

VNV Nation is the electronic project of Ronan Harris, formed in 1990 in Ireland before relocating to Hamburg, Germany, where the band has been based for years. Harris writes and produces the music, joined on stage by drummer Mark Jackson since the mid-1990s. The band’s sound spans futurepop, EBM and electronic body music, built on Harris’s synth compositions and vocals.
VNV Nation released the studio album “Electric Sun” in 2023, its first full-length in five years following 2018’s “Noire,” preceded by the single “Before the Rain.” The band has toured extensively across Europe and North America in the years since, including extra North American dates in 2024. The band’s live schedule now resumes with previously unaffected December 2026 shows in Hamburg and Chemnitz, while the postponed festival dates and the cancelled Unity Festival shows mark the immediate impact of Harris’s back surgery.
