This year, Swiss band The Young Gods celebrates its 40th anniversary, and the trio marks the occasion with their fourteenth studio album—”Appear Disappear”—featuring ten tracks, some of which were introduced as strong singles.

I won’t go so far as to say they’ve returned entirely to their early sound, but longtime fans will certainly recognize a similar raw, unpolished intensity. The album sounds surprisingly modern, proving that it’s still possible to stand apart from the crowd. The secret lies in its gritty production: a fierce interplay between distorted guitars, deep, humming basslines, tight rhythms, and a dark, menacing atmosphere that envelops the tracks. It’s a solid release overall, with only one track—arguably the weakest—offering a momentary break from the otherwise relentless flow. Frontman Franz Treichler has lost none of his original power or charisma. He delivers a commanding performance—mostly in English, but also in French—touching on sensitive and at times deeply personal themes. The current global climate, with its numerous conflicts, is a clear reference point, and there’s also a moving tribute to the loss of his wife.

The Young Gods clearly aren’t done yet. With “Appear Disappear”, they deliver what I consider an absolute musical gem. Choosing a favorite album from their long and influential career is no easy task, but this one ranks very high on the list. Respect. (Rating:9).

About The Young Gods

The Young Gods is an industrial rock band from Switzerland, formed in 1985 in Fribourg. The band first gained attention with its self-titled debut album “The Young Gods” in 1987, followed by “L’Eau Rouge” in 1989 and “T.V. Sky” in 1992, which brought international recognition.

Known for its fusion of rock and electronics, the group underwent several lineup changes over the decades. After a hiatus in the early 2010s, it returned with the album “Data Mirage Tangram” in 2019, followed by an instrumental reinterpretation of Terry Riley’s “In C” in 2022. The current line-up consists of Franz Treichler (vocals, guitar), Cesare Pizzi (samplers, electronics) and Bernard Trontin (drums). The band is signed to Two Gentlemen, based in Lausanne, Switzerland, which released “Appear Disappear” on June 13, 2025.
