The Cold Field – Alive (Album – Digital/CD/Vinyl – Cold Transmission Music)

“Alive” is the third album from the Australian duo The Cold Field, and from the very first notes, it transports listeners back to the vibrant heyday of the 80s. The album weaves a soundscape that oscillates between Dark-Wave and Shoegaze, with a growing resemblance to the ethereal style of The Cocteau Twins. The guitar work is nothing short of magical, offering moments of melodic brilliance that glide effortlessly over deep bass lines and resonant vocals. Released by Cold Transmission Music, “Alive” stands as yet another masterpiece in The Cold Field’s discography. (Rate:8½).

About The Cold Field
The Cold Field is the Australian post-punk and dark-wave duo of Ian Messenger and Heath Newberry, formed in 2019. Built on drum machines, bass guitar, synthesizers, electric guitars and distorted vocals, the band’s sound mixes early 80s post-punk and Joy Division with contemporary acts such as Lebanon Hanover and Soft Kill.
The duo released their full-length debut “Black River” in 2020, followed by “Hollows”, on Cold Transmission Music, in 2021. The Cold Field went on to discuss their work in a Side-Line interview, before returning with the third album, “Alive”.

Why we ask
Advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations we have not put up a paywall, and we refuse to add annoying advertising, so we need to ask for your help. Side-Line’s independent journalism takes time, money and hard work to produce, and we do it to push the artists we like, who are equally fighting to survive.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.
