Bakis Sirros has released numerous albums over the past 20 years, each marked by his passion and devotion to vintage synth sounds. His latest release, therefore, could hardly bear a more fitting title: “Modular Stories”.

This Greek artist commands an impressive arsenal of analog machines, which serve as a kind of sonic laboratory for this opus. The style and atmosphere remain deeply ambient, once again evoking the sound of the early pioneers. At the same time, the album feels like a bold experiment—arguably one of the most abstract works the artist has produced in recent years. The compositions may be less immediately accessible, yet they never lose their sense of magic.

It is a work that feels as though it belongs to a bygone era, yet it carries a refreshing quality thanks to its distinctive tonalities and timbres. (Rating:7).

About Parallel Worlds

Parallel Worlds is the project of Greek synthesist Bakis Sirros, who formed it in 1994 and became part of the country’s active electronic scene from 1998. The music combines analogue sequences and rhythms with dreamy, atmospheric textures, drawing on both modern electronica and the feel of 1970s electronic pioneers.

Sirros has released widely on Ian Boddy‘s DiN label, including “Obsessive Surrealism” in 2007, the solo album “Shade”, and “Plector” in 2022. He has also worked with ambient composer Alio Die, and runs the side projects Interconnected, with Ingo Zobel, and Memory Geist, with Steve Law. “Modular Stories”, his latest album, was issued on the Neo Ouija label as a digital and CD release.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
