Music consumption has drastically changed through the ages, yet we’d say the turn to the digital may have been the most impactful. With both upsides and downsides to consider, one thing’s for sure – listening to music has never been more accessible or varied. Let’s take a closer look at how digitalization has shaped our musical experiences.

The Evolution of Music

Music is part of our everyday soundtrack: from visiting a restaurant to watching a TV show, we can’t avoid it even if we wanted to. Even when it comes to playing games, we get to enjoy a pleasant soundtrack alongside it. Of course, this has changed over the years, going from 8-bit basic sounds to the complex music we are now accustomed to.

As an example, let’s look at classic casino games, which were typically only enjoyed in brick-and-mortar establishments where the main sounds would come out from the machines themselves. Now, even the digitized classic casino games along with modern and innovative blends like Slingo games have a dedicated soundtrack to them. If you’ve never played this combination of slots and bingo or any other casino game, there are plenty more examples that can be found in other games like platformers or in general how we enjoy music.

We have seen a dramatic shift in how we all listen to music, with vinyl records, cassettes, and even CDs being relegated to retro devices that are now used more for nostalgic purposes. Instead, modern devices such as smartphones have taken over and are used to access the vast world of music. For this to happen, we had the rise of MP3 technology to thank, which allowed us to store and share music in a way we never could before.

The Benefits of Digital Music

Let’s start with the fact that accessibility has reached unprecedented levels, as digital music can now easily be streamed through platforms like YouTube Music and Spotify. We can even download music directly to our phones, so when we don’t have access to the internet, we can still continue enjoying our favorite tracks.

Music is all about sharing moments and memories. Now, it’s easy to share our favorite songs through a quick link. This has also deeply impacted independent artists, as it’s now easier for them to be found by their online profiles. Being able to profit from their music without having to sign with a record label has ensured we get to hear more diverse and unique voices.

Finally, we have to mention how customizable digital music is. Rather than being limited to a set list of songs, either from one album or burned on a CD, we can curate our very own playlists. And if we’re looking for fresh tunes, we’re only a search away from public playlists that can introduce us to new music around the world.

While we can easily see the benefits of this for us regular folk, it’s important to note how it has impacted musicians too. But overall, digital music has been revolutionary for most people, allowing us to access whatever we want, whenever we want.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
