Genre/Influences: Minimal-Electro, EBM.

Format: Digital, Cassette.

Background/Info: Depht Mod is a French project hailing from Rennes. “Catch The Blue” is their second EP, revealing six tracks.

Content: It’s not easy defining the sound of this project, but the songs are clearly driven by vintage sound treatments. The composition is characterized by dark bass lines and icy synth tunes. You’ll notice fragmented vocal parts running through the tracks.

+ + + : “Catch The Blue” looks like a good-old mini-album featuring 6 different songs. That’s appreciable and perfectly matched with the retro sound approach of the band. There’s something 80s like running through the work and mainly emerging through the terrific, icy synth lines. The sphere is hostile, mainly coming through during the last 3 cuts. The fragmented vocals sound like samplings and reinforce the freaky atmosphere.

– – – : No true minus points!

Conclusion: Depht Mod has achieved a great piece of music. There’s a retro influence running through the songs and yet this work has something visionary.

Best songs: “Catch The Blue”, “I Try To Stay”, “Trust The Shifting”, “Danza Eterna”.

Rate: 8½.

Inferno Sound Diaries
I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
