Are Mundal – Kreis (EP – Telesterion Records)

Genre/Influences: Soundscape, Experimental.
Format: Digital,CD, Vinyl.
Background/Info: Norwegian project Are Mundal has been active since the ’90 and are releasing new stuff on an irregular basis.
Content: This work is featuring 2 extended cuts. The work is clearly conceived as a Soundscape or sonic collage. The first cut is more elaborated and diversified featuring freaky, spoken, samplings, electronic sequences and slow rhythms. The second cut is into pure Soundscape.
+ + + : I really like the first cut which is well-crafted and more accessible by the slow cadence and samplings. This track reminds me a bit of early, Experimental, work of The Klinik. I also have to say a word about the cool artwork from the vinyl format which is also including prints of artwork by the artist.
– – – : The second track left me rather unmoved for its more explicit Experimental approach. This cut would be more interesting when getting joined by visual work.
Conclusion: A dark and mysterious sonic travel which will appeal for Experimental lovers.

About Are Mundal
Are Mundal is a Norwegian experimental and soundscape artist based in Bergen, active since the 1990s and releasing material on an irregular basis. His work spans tape, electronics, guitar, Tibetan clarinet and singing bowls, and includes a self-titled album issued in 1996 in a limited pressing of 600 copies. He has also recorded under the names Irminsul and Nacht Und Nebel, and has appeared in the groups Brun Bønne and The Torske/Mundal Explosion. The “Kreis” EP continues that irregular release pattern with two extended soundscape pieces.

Why we ask
Advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations we have not put up a paywall, and we refuse to add annoying advertising, so we need to ask for your help. Side-Line’s independent journalism takes time, money and hard work to produce, and we do it to push the artists we like, who are equally fighting to survive.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.
