Background/Info: Belarus solo-project Ugasanie is driven by Pavel Malyshkin. The artist released an impressive number of productions since late 2010.
Content: “Freedom And loneliness” sounds like an appropriate title for this sonic experience. The work is dominated by a deep feeling of reverie, which progressively moves towards darker thoughts and visual appeal. You get the impression watching a movie, which is slowly becoming more and more thrilling. The mix of icy, breathing sound treatments and field recordings create this anguished illusion.
+ + + : The work is matching with the northern landscapes of eternal Winter and solitude. You can feel the ‘freedom’, but also the desolate landscapes where time seems to have no real impact. Ugasanie creates a sonic voyage throughout this unique world, sometimes adding a Ritual touch to the work. The song “Ritual” says enough and is a true masterpiece. But I also have to mention “Long North Night”, which is a poignant sonic testimony. The icy and dark spheres supporting this opus both create the extraordinary impact of this album; a work dedicated to the magic of nature!
– – – : The debut tracks of the album aren’t the most convincing ones, like a little bit hesitant to choose the right direction.
Conclusion: Ugasanie moves on composing fascinating Cinematographic music, but I still have the impression the ‘best’ album still has to come!

Ugasanie is the solo dark ambient project of Belarusian musician Pavel Malyshkin, formed in autumn 2010. Malyshkin spent six months in the Arctic Circle on the Yamal Peninsula, an experience that shaped the project’s recurring theme of the North. He builds his material from synthesizers, field recordings and live instruments including the khomus (jaw harp), ocarina and zhaleyka. Releases on Cryo Chamber include “Eye Of Tunguska” (2015) and “Border Of Worlds” (2016). “Freedom And Loneliness”, reviewed here, continues that catalog.
