Zavoloka – Istyna (Digital/CD/Vinyl Album – Prostir / I Shall Sing Until My Land Is Free)
The Ukrainian Kateryna Zavoloka returns with a new album of her solo-project, Zavoloka. The release features six understated tracks under the title “Istyna”, which translates as ‘truth’.
Listeners familiar with the project will once again recognize their wide range of influences. No two pieces sound alike, yet a clear common thread runs through the work. The album shifts between weightless, atmospheric passages that at times culminate in a distinctly Psychedelic experience, while also drawing on their unique approach to Techno—seamlessly blending it with elements of Ambient and Trance. At moments, the floating textures give way to a more ominous, menacing tone.
The result is a collection rich with hidden gems, an eclectic electronic journey that captures Zavoloka at their very best. (Rating:8).

About Zavoloka
Zavoloka is the solo project of Kateryna Zavoloka, a Ukrainian sound and visual artist from Kyiv who combines digital and analog synthesis with Ukrainian folk sources and traditional instruments. She co-runs the Kyiv label Kvitnu with Dmytro Fedorenko (Kotra) and also records as part of Cluster Lizard.
Past Zavoloka albums include a conceptual series tied to the four classical elements: “Viter” (air), “Vedana” (water), “Syngonia” (earth) and “Promeni” (fire), released on Kvitnu. “Istyna” is her latest full-length, released across digital, CD and vinyl formats.
I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.
