Umatik is a French producer and DJ who, in addition to this EP, also released a fantastic release last year in collaboration with another French project, Back From The Wave.

This EP contains four tracks, including an instrumental version of the title song. “Dear Lonely Devil” takes the listener into darker regions of Techno, mixed with Minimal-Electro and EBM. Cold electro loops and deep, resonant sounds are among its most striking features. The title track, in particular, is driven by an irresistible and impressive ’90s-esque, raw, Techno lead that evokes memories of The Prodigy. It sounds raw and powerful, striking a strong balance between Dark-Techno and EBM, with screaming vocal fragments layered on top. On another track -which could have been a title song as well- entitled “My True Crush”, the vocals are pitched and lean more toward an Electroclash aesthetic.

Overall, Umatik delivers a varied EP with several very strong tracks. Highly recommended. (Rating:8½).

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising.
