More than 20 years after their last release, the Australian duo Soma has returned with a long-lost gem. David Thrussell and Pieter Bourke created these tracks around the turn of the century, but until now, the record had only been available in their home country. This album immerses the listener in a dreamy, Cinematic soundscape that gradually evolves into an enchanting fusion of Eastern atmospheres, featuring sitar sounds mixed with astral, Electro, tones and slow, hypnotic rhythms. The inclusion of spoken word elements adds an accessible and mysterious layer, enhancing the album’s allure. The result is a captivating listening experience that feels both timeless and evocative. About Soma
Soma is an Australian project built around David Thrussell, also active with Snog and Black Lung, and Pieter Bourke, known for his work with Dead Can Dance and Lisa Gerrard. Discogs also lists Mikee Parker as a member.
The duo released its self-titled debut album “Soma” in 1993 on Mumbo Jumbo. It moved to the Australian label Extreme for “Hollow Earth” in 1994, “Sleepwalker” in 1995, the 12 inch “Soma Romanz” in 1995, “The Inner Cinema” in 1996, “Arcane” in 1996, and “Stygian Vistas” in 1997. “My Ancient Vihmaana” followed in 2001 on Karmic Hit. “The Winged Measurer”, released on ant-zen, collects tracks recorded around the turn of the millennium that had previously only been released in Australia.
I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.
