Background/Info: Mod21 is a solo project set up and driven by Manuele Chiaravalloti. He already released a few previous productions and now delivers “Chapter 1”, which is also available in a vinyl edition.
Content: You will directly notice a minimal electro style driven by a slow cadence. The tempo progressively becomes faster, but the minimal style remains. “Chapter 1” is a kind of experimental techno style characterized by great, but repetitive sequences.
+ + + : Mod21 is one of those artists confirming that techno music can be much more than hard, repetitive kicks, but also a real creative process. I like the diversity in the rhythms, which are moving from slow- to faster cuts and even irregular beats. I enjoyed the kind of ping-pong like sequences running through the opening cut while the next song is characterized by a mysterious sphere hanging over the track. This EP features 4 different tracks and that’s more interesting than getting a title song plus an endless list of remixes.
– – – : “Chapter 1” is a real enjoyable release, but maybe missing a kind of highlight.
Conclusion: Mod21 belongs to this growing list of visionary techno artists who are trying to discover new sonic paths. I’ve already heard more convincing productions in the genre, but if you’re into electronic minimalism you definitely have to taste “Chapter 1”.
Best songs: “Philadelphia Experiment”, “Step By Step”.

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. And unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.
Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.
If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
The donations are safely powered by Paypal.
