Llumen – The Breaking Waves (Album – Digital/2CD – Alfa Matrix)
After two stylistic, elaborate, and promising albums, Belgian artist Pieter Coussement returns to his beloved Llumen project. The influences remain versatile, sounding like a sonic fusion of EBM, IDM, Electro/Future-Pop, and Ambient. Over the years, Llumen has become more danceable, and this is evident in the new work, which sounds like his most danceable production ever. It is an intelligent production that also dares to experiment with somewhat cheaper Dance leads. “You Can Have It All” is an absolute masterpiece. The album also gets a solid bonus with numerous remixes featuring big names like Grendel, as well as label mates like Implant, Aiboforcen, Aesthetischye, and others. It may not be Llumen’s best work, but it is still a creative and polished production which might appeal for Haujobb-fans. (Rate:8½).

About Llumen
Llumen is the solo project of Belgian musician Pieter Coussement, active in the dark electro and future-pop scene. Side-Line covered the project’s EP “The Dark In Her Eyes” in April 2021, featuring remixes by Auger, Implant, Antibody, and Entrzelle, followed by the album “Polygon Heart” in June 2021. The 9-track EP “Die Stille Totgeschwiegen” followed in December 2023. Llumen released “The Breaking Waves” as a limited 2CD set on Alfa Matrix in May 2024, discussed by Coussement in a Side-Line interview the following month about the album acting as a reflection of inner turmoil. “You Can Have It All” is featured on that album, alongside remixes from Grendel, Implant, and Aiboforcen.
I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.
