Claquedent releases the lead single “Power Reserve” from the debut album of the same name, out now. The full album follows on November 27 via Phage Tapes and Solium Records, on digital and cassette. The nine-track album moves through industrial, metal, noise, dub, hip-hop and power electronics.
Paul Void plays drums in the post-industrial band Stamp and the noise rock band Crève-Coeur, and has also worked with Al-Qasar and Contrevent. On “Power Reserve” he raps and sings himself on several tracks for the first time, and brings in guests: C., vocalist for Pyrecult and Dødsforakt, Californian MC Hank Rubée, and Faggia, a former Stamp bandmate. Fabien Claes of Lugosi and Boris Patchinsky of Parlor, both of whom also play in Crève-Coeur alongside Void, contribute guitar and bass.
The title single is one of the album’s few purely instrumental cuts, built on a bone-shaking kick drum, distorted dub bass drops and the sound of hammered sheet metal, with a post-rock finale featuring Claes and Patchinsky. Void built the track around two samples: the opening comes from “Calvaire”, a Belgian film, while the middle section carries a 1962 recording of Jean Cocteau addressing the people of the year 2000.
“He’s warning us that we’re racing toward our own destruction, that we need to slow down, that progress is a mistake,” Void says of the Cocteau sample. “It sounds completely old-fashioned today, yet prophetic. To me, it gave even more meaning to the title ‘Power Reserve’, with this watchmaking concept, the race against time, and the need to slow down if we want to avoid crashing into the ecological wall […] What if the ceaseless race for progress was a mistake?”
The title borrows a term from Void’s other interest, watchmaking: a watch’s power reserve is how long it keeps running on a full wind, before the mainspring loses enough tension for the movement to stop. Claquedent’s first release was the 2024 mini-album “Untitled” on Croux Records, which leaned into harsh noise; “Power Reserve” spreads out from there, moving between electronic-tinged metal, techno built for the floor, post-punk aggression, slow heavy dub, throwback black metal and rap pushed toward noise.
