Ego Likeness – Wolves (EP – Metropolis)

Genre/Influences: Electro-pop, trip-pop, electro-wave.
Format: Digital.
Background/Info: It’s a while ago we heard new stuff from Ego Likeness. The formation set up in 1999 by Steven Archer and singer Donna Lynch recorded this “Wolves”-EP in 2017 –two years after their last album “When The Wolves Return”. “Wolves” features the title song plus three remixes from other songs.
Content: Ego Likeness always composed a very own sound and it’s not that different for “Wolves”. The title song is a mix of different elements, moving somewhere in between electro-pop and electro-wave music.
We next get remixes by Stoneburner (the tribal project of Steven Archer), Out Out Vs. Stoneburner and Inertia. Both remixes of “Darkness” –originally released at the last album, have something dark and hot.
+ + + : It feels good to hear Ego Likeness again. This band clearly has something apart, which is mainly illustrated by the title song, but it also comes through in the remixes. And when Steven Archer as Stoneburner is remixing Steven Archer as Ego Likeness there’s some part of magic emerging. The downtempo-like “Aviary” features a great twist between electronics and guitar playing. But the real attention grabber is the remix of “Darkness” by Out Out Vs. Stoneburner. This remix sounds hard and really hot!
– – – : Time for totally new work and I hope we’ll get a new Ego Likeness album!
Conclusion: This EP is a small little gift to satisfy the fans of the band, but I’ve to admit it’s a damned great work.
Best songs: “Darkness – Out Out Vs. Stoneburner Rework”, “Darkness – Inertia Remix”.

About Ego Likeness
Ego Likeness is the electrogoth and darkwave project formed in Baltimore in 1999 by Steven Archer (guitar, vocals, synths, programming) and Donna Lynch (vocals, words, piano). The duo’s album chronology includes “Songs From A Dead City” (1999), “Dragonfly” (2000), “Water To The Dead” (2004), “The Order Of The Reptile” (2006), “The Lowest Place On Earth” (2008), “Breedless” (2010), “Treacherous Thing” (2012) and “New Legion” (2015).
Archer also records tribal and post-industrial material as Stoneburner. “When The Wolves Return” appeared in 2015, followed by “The Compass EPs” in 2016 and the “Wolves” remix EP in 2017, which pairs the title track with reworks by Stoneburner, Out Out Vs. Stoneburner and Inertia.

Why we ask
Advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations we have not put up a paywall, and we refuse to add annoying advertising, so we need to ask for your help. Side-Line’s independent journalism takes time, money and hard work to produce, and we do it to push the artists we like, who are equally fighting to survive.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.
