Ded.Pixel – Form.Follows.Function (CD EP – Analogue Trash Records)
Genre/Influences: Cinematographic, electro-ambient.
Content: Ded.Pixel (dedpxl) is a duo operating from Manchester, which comes to diversify the Analogue Trash roster. I already discovered a few interesting bands on this label (mainly dealing with synth-pop and EBM orientated music), but Ded.Pixel enlarges the label’s musical horizon.
The debut EP features 5 songs, which from start on takes us away on a dreamy electro-trip full of imagery. It all sounds very cinematographic and this feeling will be only reinforced during the upcoming cuts. From dynamic percussion passages to dreamy songs, the common element at the release remains the evasive character of the compositions.
I had a little preference for the global progression of “Are We Still Here?” while the darker, but still dreamy-like “Nil” shows a more delicate approach in writing. The slow cadence here sounds more like an extra effect instead of rhythm. The songs are pretty cohesive yet reveal different accents from one track to the other.
“Form.Follows.Function” is an instrumental composition, but I perfectly imagine a few vocal parts here and then.
Conclusion: Ded.Pixel did not exactly reinvent the cinematographic electro style, however they do reveal enjoyable elements.
Best songs: “Are We Still Here?”, “Nil.”

Why we ask
Advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations we have not put up a paywall, and we refuse to add annoying advertising, so we need to ask for your help. Side-Line’s independent journalism takes time, money and hard work to produce, and we do it to push the artists we like, who are equally fighting to survive.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.
