Ships In The Night is a solo project led by Alethea Leventhal. After releasing two independent albums, she signed with Metropolis Music, where her first official release, “Protection Spells”, has now seen the light of day.

The ten tracks are infused with a dreamy yet subtly mysterious atmosphere, carried by Alethea’s Ethereal, fragile, and at times sensual voice. The slow tempos enhance the album’s sensual character, while the arrangements are executed with refined delicacy and nuance. Among the highlights is a beautifully rendered cover of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy The Silence,” interpreted with the same care and elegance as the rest of the album.

“Protection Spells” is a graceful, soothing record that gently draws the listener in—and above all, it introduces us to a truly gifted artist. (Rating:8).

About Ships In The Night

Ships In The Night is the solo project of Virginia-based performer Alethea Leventhal, working in a Witch House and Vaporwave-adjacent style. Leventhal was previously a member of The Harrow, a band that released several albums and singles on labels including Function Operate and Aufnahme + Wiedergabe between 2013 and 2020.

As Ships In The Night, Leventhal released two independent albums before signing to Metropolis Records. The label debut single “The Fire” was followed by the album “Protection Spells”, released May 9, 2025, her third full-length and first for Metropolis, mixing dark electronics with ethereal, ambient textures.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
