Beckahesten – Svältens Tid (Digital/CD/Vinyl Album – Cyclic Law)
This summer, the Swedish trio Beckahesten comprised of Peo Bengtsson, Per Åhlund, and vocalist Viktoria Rolandsdotter, released their third album, “Svältens Tid” (translated as “The Time Of Famine”). The opus features four captivating new tracks that serve as a perfect continuation of their previous work. Drawing on Dark-Ambient atmospheres infused with Ritualistic percussion, the music conjures images of forbidden, shadowy rituals, perfectly complementing the overwhelming soundscapes that offer a rich visual appeal. While it evokes elements of dark fantasy, Beckahesten primarily showcases their talent through this meticulously crafted record. Additionally, “Svältens Tid” is available on vinyl through Cloister Recordings. (Rate:8½).

About Beckahesten
Beckahesten is a Swedish trio set up by Peo Bengtsson, Per Åhlund and vocalist Viktoria Rolandsdotter. Åhlund was previously involved with Sophia and has also been active with Skare and Diskrepant, next to appearing as a live member of Karjalan Sissit. The band name refers to a creature from Nordic folklore, an insidious water spirit that tricks people into riding on its back before pulling them into the water.
The trio released the albums “Vattenhålens Dräpare” (2020) and “Tydor” (2021), plus the single “Midvinter” (2021), through Cyclic Law, with Johannes Ahlberg mastering all three releases. In 2022, Per Åhlund talked about the band’s working process in Side-Line’s Click Interview with Beckahesten.
“Svältens Tid”, released in 2024 on Cyclic Law with a vinyl edition through Cloister Recordings, is the trio’s third album.
I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.
