Avfall – Weltschmerz (Digital/CD Album – Novoton)

The Stockholm-based duo Avfall formed several years ago, but this year appears to have been particularly productive for them. “Weltschmerz” is their official debut album, released by Novoton, and features no fewer than thirteen tracks.
More than any specific musical style, it’s the melancholic courage that defines these songs. From the very first notes, a sense of melancholy emerges and intensifies through powerful choruses. The music is built around a fusion of guitar and electronics, resulting in a cross-pollination of Dark-Wave, Electro-Wave, and even Post-Punk influences. Most of the songs are sung in English, though the duo also includes tracks in their native Swedish.
“Weltschmerz” is a fitting title for such a melancholic body of work. While all the songs didn’t fully convince me, it still offers several beautiful moments — and Avfall is certainly a band to keep an eye on. (Rating:6½).

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.
Since you’re here …
… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.
Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.
If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
The donations are safely powered by Paypal.
