Genre/Influences: Electro-Wave, EBM.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: Enzo Kreft (real name Eric Vandamme) is a prolific artist since the resurrection of his project. The Belgian musician who was active during the 80s and early 90s brought his project back to life after years of silence. “Different World” is Enzo Kreft’s fourth full length album since 2016 –while he also released a compilation album with early stuff. “Different World” is inspired by the ongoing pandemic.

Content: The main source of inspiration can be noticed in some titles of the tracklist and of course in the lyrics. Enzo Kreft feels concerned about the world we’re living in and Mother Nature. The pandemic is a logical, but sad evolution of human’s behavior and that’s what he clearly tries to explain. Sound-wise he holds on to his taste for vintage electronics, mixing Minimalism together with the 80s Electro-Wave we’re used to hearing. There also is a solid EBM piece (cf. “Viral Paranoia”), which sounds as a wink to DAF and the somewhat Kraftwerk-pop driven “Ostrich Politics”.

+ + + : “Different World” once more confirms the talent and skills of this Belgian artist. His work remains a fascinating mix between Electro-Wave with synth lines reminiscent of Gary Numan and some harder and other darker pieces. The EBM-driven “Viral Paranoia” is a cool song in its genre. The darker sounding “It’s Going On And On” is totally appropriated with the lyrics revealing a dystopian perception of our world. Enzo Kreft is the living testimony of the 80s; desolated themes put on dark, melodic sequences and sometimes empowered by harder EBM vibes. This album also reveals an engaged artist who feels clearly concerned about our planet and the failure of the Western World…

– – – : I know it’s pretty 80s like, but I’ve never been a huge fan of songs ending with a fade out.

Conclusion: Enzo Kreft already composes an accomplished retro-like Electro work. This artist definitely deserves more recognition and especially from abroad!

Best songs: “Viral Paranoia”, “Woke Up This Morning”, “It’s Going On and On”, “Ostrich Politics”, “Nature Isn’t Bound By Borders”.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
