Background/Info: Irish DJ and producer Diarmaid O Meara has already released numerous EP’s and also a few albums. Based in Berlin, this year he strikes back with the first chapter from the so-called “Gobsmacked”-series. Diarmaid O Meara describes himself as ‘trying to push the boundaries of electronic noise’ and that’s what he tried to express on this 12” featuring 5 tracks –including previously released singles.
Content: The work of this artist has always been driven by techno vibes. It’s not that different for “Gobsmacked!” and especially the B-side of the EP featuring 3 songs. Both songs from the A-side are techno-minded as well although they’re a bit darker and more minimal-like. The 3 other cuts are more linear while losing the dark element.
+ + + : I like EP’s featuring different songs and without any single remix featured. So Diarmaid O Meara delivered 5 cuts taking off with the 2 cool songs from the A-side. This is definitely my favorite side. The first cut “In your Head” is a pretty cool track, which has something minimal-like and dark as well. I also like the ghost-like sampled words running through the song. Both songs from the A-side reveal the more elaborated work of the artist.
– – – : I’m not that fond of the B-side, which sounds less inspired and into ‘classic’ techno music without a real spirit.
Conclusion: “Gobsmacked!” reveals two techno-faces from Diarmaid O Meara. There’s an interesting side and a forgettable side.
Best songs: “In Your Head”, “Selfisch Bass”.
