Genre/Influences: Electro-pop, wave-pop.

Background/Info: French trio ‘ZeN’ (vocals, keyboards, programming), ‘Soe V’ (vocals, keyboards) and Peter Rainman (keyboards, programming and backing vocals) are back on track unleashing their newest full length. The band has already been ctive since the early 90s.

Content: If you’re a bit familiar with the sound of Waiting For Words, you’ll easily recognize the pop approach with a typical retro/80s touch on top. But the album is also driven by a modern touch and other indie-pop elements. There’s a constant movement from pure old-school elements into a refreshing kind of electro/wave-pop music. Now melancholic and then more danceable, the work covers a wide range of influences. Next to the male vocals there’re also a few male-female duo songs.

+ + + : The beginning part of the album is characterized by a sensual touch, which you can find back in the singing, but also in the music. The main strength of the album and this band however remain the retro-feeling, which you’ll notice in some good-old rhythm-box sounds and melody lines. This is synthesizer music for the addicts with a mature production process.

– – – : This is an easy listening work, but I’m missing potential hits and/or real highlights. It all sounds sweet and ‘clean’, but this band can do better!

Conclusion: “Egocracy” features a few cool songs, but not that single song that will make you buy the album without hesitation.

Best songs: “Away”, “Great New World”, “Egocracy”.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
