Genre/Influences: Ambient, experimental, cinematographic.

Background/Info: The original members of Front 242, Daniel B and Dirk Bergen are back on track with their experimental-minded project Nothing But Noise. This new opus features 5 new cuts.

Content: Nothing But Noise has nothing in common with Front 242 although there’s a similar fascination for sound creation. It clearly sounds as an electronic experiment, which sometimes remind to early pioneers of synthesizer music. The experimental element has been polished and made more accessible through the multiple electronic treatments and effects plus the space-like atmospheres.

The songs remain instrumentals sometimes driven by slow rhythms.

+ + + : Daniel B and Dirk Bergen are sound/noise architects, which is an essential part of their composition. It’s an essential element that was already featured on early Front 242 work. “eXistence Oscilla+ion <> prEsen+” is more into sound experimentalism and I dare to say the exorcism of unexplored ideas. I like the raw sound treatments and the magic of the effects, but also the subtle construction of the bleeps. If the opening cut might remind to Front 242 for some sounds, the last song excels in reverie getting closer to Jean-Michel Jarre.

– – – : The experimental side of the work will for sure be an aspect that will not convince all electro-lovers, but especially the biggest fans of Front 242. This has nothing in common with EBM!

Conclusion: I maybe expected a much more experimental work while this new opus by Nothing But Noise is an intelligent and more accessible work that will please all lovers of visionary electronic music. No doubt about it, Daniel B and Dirk Bergen have always invented the future of electronic music.

Best songs: “Torch”, “diSchotomy”, “121212”.
