Genre/Influences: Techno-body, minimal-EBM, industrial-techno.

Background/Info: Ivan Borisov is a Russian artist who has been involved with several projects. He once started with an electro-punk band and finally started Ohota as a side-project dealing with a mix of techno and EBM. His official debut album “Russian Tape” has been released on the French +Closer², which is a new (sub)-label from Unknown Pleasures Records dedicated to ‘artists with a futuristic vision of electronic music’.

Content: The opening- and last track are into pure ambient music. In between these tracks you’ll discover a perfect mix of industrial-, techno music and EBM. The atmosphere hanging over the songs is rather dark. One of the most noticeable tracks is the free adaptation (cover version) of Madonna’s legendary hit “Vogue”.

+ + + : I first of all noticed a great sound production emerging from this work. Sound-wise the mix of EBM, techno and industrial is not that new, but I have to admit there’s something atypical running through this album. It’s an efficient osmosis between different related genres, with a real dark flavor on top. I especially like the industrial sound treatments, which sometimes result in overwhelming passages. “Posh” is definitely one of the most astonishing pieces of the work.

– – – : I think it would have been interesting to get a few vocal lines and/or spoken samplings here and then.

Conclusion: Ohota is an interesting newcomer, which will appeal for music lovers from different underground scenes.

Best songs: “Posh”, “Vogue”, “Diktat”.

Rate: (7½).

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
