Genre/Influences: Experimental, abstract, industrial.

Format: Digital, CD, Cassette.

Background/Info: This album is the re-release and for the first time on CD of the album “In search Of Tarkovsky” originally self-released in 1986 by the American project Minóy. It was a project set up and driven by Stanley Keith Bowsza who unfortunately passed away in 2010. The man released an impressive number of releases (mainly on cassette) during the 80s. This work was an ode to Russian writer and film director Andrei Tarkovsky.

Content: Like the original edit, the album features 2 long duration cuts. The title track creates the sensation entering into a sound labyrinth of electronic bleeps, unknown noises and lost voices. The sphere is dark and haunting, giving you the feeling to experience an invisible presence. The other track is rather monotonous and even if it still has something dark, it also has something relaxing.

+ + + : Time has no weight on this composition. It however reveals an extremely experimental sound format, which has something anti-music like. Bowsza is not really composing music, but experimenting with sounds and noises. It became a dense sound collage, which especially at the title cut will get you in its grip for nearly 30 minutes.

– – – : The minimal and deeply experimental format of the work makes it hardly accessible. This kind of productions is clearly meant for initiated experimental music lovers.

Conclusion: Cold Spring has reactivated an old and definitely forgotten work from the 80s experimental/industrial scene. It also is an opportunity to (re)discover this artist.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising.
