Bootblacks – Paradise (Digital/CD/Vinyl Album – Artoffact Records)

“Paradise” is the fifth album by Brooklyn-based band Bootblacks. The current line-up features the trio Panther Almqvist (vocals), Barrett Hiatt (synths), and Kalle Fagerberg (guitar).
The album consists of nine tracks that immediately transport the listener back to the golden era of 80s Wave-Pop. The band has now fully embraced a distinctly Pop-oriented sound—one they’ve mastered with impressive finesse. The production is polished and professional, exuding the spirit of 80s music in both style and substance. While many comparisons could be made, the album frequently reminds me of early Simple Minds. The interplay between guitar and synths is particularly infectious, with the 80s vibe further amplified by tasteful saxophone parts.
It’s also worth noting that several guest musicians contributed to the album, adding their unique touches. Among them, the presence of Chris Vrenna (Nine Inch Nails) stands out—underscoring the band’s ambition and high standards.
“Paradise” has a revitalizing effect, evoking the magic of the 80s and bringing back memories of my own youth. It’s a nostalgic yet fresh experience that highlights Bootblacks’ evolving artistry. (Rating:8).

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.
Since you’re here …
… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.
Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.
If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
