About Death In June

Death In June was founded in 1981 in the United Kingdom by Douglas P. (Douglas Pearce), Tony Wakeford, and Patrick Leagas. Initially rooted in post-punk and political aesthetics, the project quickly evolved into a pioneering force within the neofolk genre.

New European Recordings (NER) was founded by Douglas P. in 1981 to release Death In June’s first record, the “Heaven Street” 12″ single. Early releases such as “The Guilty Have No Pride” and “Nada!” were also distributed through New European Recordings (NER)

Over time, NER also worked with other artists like In The Nursery, Joy Of Life, Boyd Rice And Friends, Strength Through Joy, and TeHom. In the 1980s, Rough Trade UK handled NER’s distribution. In the 1990s, World Serpent Distribution took over, but legal issues between Death In June and World Serpent led to a split in the late 1990s. Starting in 2000, Tesco Organisation in Germany became NER’s distributor for seven years, until 2007. Since then, Soleilmoon Recordings in the United States and NEROZ in Australia have been the official worldwide distributors for NER’s catalog.

After several lineup changes, Pearce continued as the sole member from the late 1980s onward.

Throughout the 1990s, albums like “But, what ends when the Symbols shatter?” and “Rose Clouds of Holocaust” defined the band’s minimalist, acoustic direction. Later recordings – such as “Peaceful Snow” (2010) and “The Rule of Thirds” (2008) – further emphasized stark, melancholic arrangements. Death In June has remained both prolific, and controversial.
