4 of our editors had a listen to the debut album "Cold In The State Of Me" by the Swedish act Sadman aka the duo Mattias Räftegård and Lars Fernström. Released on Memento Materia the album is slowly penetrating the internatinal synthpop / electropop scene. Let's see what the result of our jury is...
- Sadman doesn’t maybe sound as the most innovative synth-pop formation, but is it really an item when discovering such a brilliant composition? "Cold In The State Of Me" contains all essential elements to speak here about a masterly release! The mix between electronics and guitar parts brings a total symbiosis while the melancholic vocals are like the cherry on the cake. Memento Materia once again confirms to have a nose for talented new-coming bands!

Sweden offers us here a rather typical electronic band in the synth pop tradition and in the quite renowned label Memento Materia (undoubtedly Sadman could be on no other label than this one). Melancholic male vocals at the forefront, some discrete and classy electronic vibes and a few tortured guitars (in the style of Depeche Mode from their "Ultra"- period). No aggression in their music, instead we get slow and introspective tracks with some eruptions here and there. The whole remains a bit too dull for my taste and if the feelings of sadness are well present, that’s a bit short for a whole album.

Surely a synth pop album lives or dies by its songs. And while the sounds here climb their way past the pitfalls of the mediocre synth bands, the songs climb even higher. Subtly crunched electronica and moody atmospherics are set against sweet, spangled melodies. Warm synths carry along on terrific cantering beats and subtle guitar lines. Add the majestic well produced vocals and you get the best synth pop album of the year!

There's lots of synthpop out there and most don't even succeed in getting outside the worst bedroom quality recordings. But behold, Sadman is quite something different. On "Cold In The State Of Me" you will discover a very mature act with a sound that reminds a lot of Dave Gahan, but just that more accessible. Although it does not hold instant hits, this release offers material that lives it own quality live. A must have!
