Getting a deal with a label is often a question of meeting the right person at the right place and the right time, but nothing is possible without a little bit of genius. That's when Sang.Rael aka Nikolas Phrasavath decided to make it an independent release because of some facilities and probably the freedom to do what he wanted. Sang.Rael, which has been set up in 1998 is a band with a huge potential and, which will for sure progressively increase its popularity! More info at www.Sangrael.net (By Stéphane Froidcoeur)
SL. How did you get into music and finally came to set up Sang.Rael?
SR. Music had always been a passion since I was young. Most of my family is musical and naturally I started playing too. Growing up I became a fan of Depeche Mode, Tears For Fears, Human League, etc. and of course like every kid listening to music they wanted to imitate their idols! It wasn't until secondary school when I started creating my own music. And at this time I was getting into other genres - notably death and black metal. The synthpop sound was already rooted in me and the intensity and aggression of metal appealed to me as well. Then I discovered the perfect balance between the two genres -industrial music- with the likes of Front Line Assembly, Chemlab, Skinny Puppy, KMFDM, Front 242. It just took off from there, along with the incarnation of an electronic project called Sang.Rael.
SL. I perceive your sound as fresh, dark-EBM where you seem to avoid cloning other bands, preferring to strive for an own sound and an own identity! So, how would you try to analyze and define the sound and style Sang.Rael?
SR. (laughs) I don't know. That's a tough one. My influences for music come from many different places. And I think the outcome of Sang.Rael matches its focus - dark EBM.
SL. I really like the title of the album, but what's the inner meaning behind and in, which way does it reflect some own experiences?
SR. Thank you! The meaning "Seasons Change and Illusions Fade" refers to progressing through phases of personal life. And building on the former, the "… Illusions Fade" part is a metaphor that pertains to seeing past the nonsense or uncovering truth, per se.
SL. The name of the band is also quite interesting for the link with the Holy Grail. Did you choose it for the link with the mythical grail or is there another significance behind?
SR. Well the way that Sang.Rael is separated, it translates to "royal blood". Being interested in ancient history, the legacy of the sang ræl has always intrigued me. And it makes for a cool band name! Why not? (laughs)
SL. What are the main sources of inspiration for the lyrical part of the band?
SR. A lot of the lyrics are based on personal experiences and observations in life and in social interactions. They're mostly positive - surprisingly [for dark music]. Not in a preaching way though. I don't like that. But what I do especially like are the lyrics for "This Moment" which you can find printed on the inner panel of the "Seasons …" digipak.
SL. How did the writing of this album happen and what did you try to accentuate?
SR. Everything just came together over the years since the project started. Many songs were created, re-created and deleted while SANG.RÆL was getting comfortable finding its own sound. My main goal was just to write dark electronic music. I also wanted to bring in other elements not usually found in industrial music and also have something to appeal and connect to the masses as well.
SL. According to you what are the strongest and weakest points on the album?
SR. I think the time that it took me to produce this album is both the strongest and weakest points. Strong because I took my time by releasing quality material. And weak because it took so long and my friends kept pushing me to release a full-length. (laughs)
SL. I personally experienced some of the drums as a little bit too flat (now and then), but that's maybe a question of equipment and production! What do you think about it?
SR. That has been noted and the changes have been made on the next album that is currently in the works. It only makes sense to progress with each album, so expect a more solid sound while retaining the little intricacies that define Sang.Rael.
