Reality’s Despair is a Belgian solo-project, which was set up more than 20 years ago now. The project self-released numerous productions, went through a hiatus of several years and got reactivated again. For the new album “Perfidious Depopulation”, Reality’s Despair got signed to the Russian label Insane Records. The work is characterized by strong retro-elements of EBM and Dark-Electro. I’d a chat with Tom.

(Courtesy by Inferno Sound Diaries)

Q: Let’s get back to the origins of Reality’s Despair. Who’s hiding behind this project and what did you’ve in mind when setting up the band? What have been your main sources of inspiration?

Tom: Reality’s Despair is a one man’s project, with headquarters just below Antwerp (Belgium), producing music in the genre of EBM and Dark-Electro, with a strong 90’s influence and with heavily processed vocals. The main sources of inspiration I find in the supernatural, the off worldly and the destructive nature of humankind, the misery of being, melancholia etc.

Q: The name of band sounds dark and totally fitting with the reality and the world of today! What did you really try to express and how did you experience the entire pandemic thing thus far? Has it been inspiring for you as musician?

Tom: Reality’s Despair is a reference to the desperation in everyone’s life, the falling and getting up, the reaching for the unattainable, chasing the dream that always will stay just a dream, the pain and loss we meet in our lives, the little to no impact we have on existence…

As for the pandemic, it’s more like a ‘plandemic’ if you ask me. Humanity on this planet is controlled by a small fraction of very wealthy and obsessed people, who advocate a reduction in human population, just to stay in control of things, and to keep possession of earth’s declining resources.

Check the data and think for yourself… sadly some people died, but how deadly is this ‘pandemic’ really? Do we really need those jabs and boosters? Are those so safe? How long will our freedom be limited? Do other opinions regarding this pandemic really need to be censored that hard? Is this proposed great reset really beneficial for us? ‘You will own nothing but you will be happy’?

There are some topics around this issue that I will address further in the coming album, so yes it’s an inspiration I guess 😉

Q: Reality’s Despair is active since the late 90s. You self-released an impressive number of productions while your new album “Perfidious Depopulation” has been signed by Insane Records. How comes it took that long to get a label deal and what does this signing mean to you? What have been your experiences as DIY artist?

Tom: The intent from the start was to completely stay independent with this project, to be able to keep doing my own thing and to evolve on my own pace. Sites like Bandcamp are an ideal place to start for a new DIY band. Bandcamp offers some fine tools to attract a decent fanbase for instance, and offers streaming as well. But after some time DIY artists hit an exposure plateau.

With some releases on the counter, I felt the time was right to scale the project up a little, to gain some more following, attract some more attention in the world of music. So, let’s say it was ‘good timing’ by Insane Records to contract me.

They made it very clear from the first conversation they truly wanted me on board, and offered me the necessary freedom I want and need for this project, so I jumped on board.

This doesn’t mean I will never be DIY again in the future, but for now I’m very happy with the label. The brain behind Insane Records actually is a very nice, respectable and reliable person, so that’s a big surplus and a good base for a stable cooperation.

Q: Let’s talk about “Perfidious Depopulation”. How did the writing and production of the album happened? Did you handle specific criteria and references in the writing/recording/production/mastering process?

Tom: It was entirely written, recorded, mixed and mastered by myself. In the past I mainly used some analog gear, like a Roland synth, sampler and drum computer, but since the restart a few years ago I mainly use the Cubase daw, and some fantastic software instruments and effects. It all happens in the box these days. It’s impressive what current software emulations can do with sound.

As for criteria and references, I just let my emotions flow and try to keep external musical influences out of my head as much as possible. I always say: music is an art, created by your brain and shaped by your heart!

Q: You already evoked your music is featuring elements of EBM and Dark-Electro while there’s a strong and explicit 90s touch running through the work, reminding me artists like Calva Y Nada, DAF, Orange Sector… Do you consider yourself as an ‘old-school’ artist and what’s your perception about ‘contemporary’ Electronics?

Tom: Thank you for the comparison, I totally love the bands you mention. Although I would have liked the name of Cygnosic in that list 🙂 I consider myself an old-school artist for sure.

Nowadays I don’t listen to current Electro often, although there are some great bands around. But I often feel there’s too little emotion put in present day music, not enough drama…

Q: After more than twenty years of involvement, how do you expect the project evolving? Are there specific items you want to improve/change? And what about live shows?

Tom: There are no plans for doing live gigs in the future, cause I don’t like to be placed in the spotlight, but never say never, right?

I always want to keep improving my writing and production skills, and I intent to keep REALITY’S DESPAIR active for some years to come, since I really enjoy the creative process. I am not going to make the mistake of quitting twice!

I feel the best song still needs to be written and there are still many topics Reality’s Despair needs to evoke. There’s still a lot of ‘butt-kicking’ to be done 😉

I am perfectly happy with my small fanbase who support me, who really love the music, and who dig the messages behind the curtains. I don’t feel the need to have thousands of fans. The more fans with certain expectations you got, the less creative freedom you have, you understand? It are the loyal fans who keep this project alive after all.

Out via Space Race Records on September 25th is the return of the Klonavenus to the scene with the album “motion:less”. The project consists of Paolo Chemnitz and Saffio and the duo here present their 3rd album.

Expect 11 songs offering a combination of EBM, darkwave, synthpop and industrial. Also included are remixes by A Copy For Collapse and legendary Italian Electro/EBM-combo Templebeat.

From Italy with dark wave love

Klonavenus was formed in Rome in 2005 by Saffio (music & programming) and Paolo Chemnitz (vocals & lyrics). After two demos, the duo signed a contract with The Fossil Dungeon label and released “Metropolights” in 2007. One year later the band released a compilation of previously unreleased tracks. In 2010 they returned with the single, “The Loser” while held remixes by Dismantled, Autodafeh and Ginger Snap5.

In the Winter of 2013, Klonavenus released the official video for “Electro Body Killer”, directed by the Italian independent filmaker Domiziano Cristopharo. We had to wait until 2015 to see the band’s second album “Angst” being released, recorded in Berlin and mastered in the US by Rob Early (Retrogramme). The album also includes remixes by Spektralized, Cygnosic and Blank.

After two years of silence, Klonavenus released a new EP as a free download (“Last Life On The Left”), then appeared at the end of 2018 in a double compilation (“Complicity Content”) released by the label E|K , with a new song called “Welcome To Violence” featuring the voice of Elisa Tomaselli. At the same time, KV released “We Fly Away”, a 7″ vinyl.

Digital World Audio will be releasing 2 new albums on October 25 from Cygnosic and Technolorgy.

From Technolorgy you can expect the “Inevitably Versatile” album, which will be released as a 2CD set. On this dark electro / synthpop album the Thessaloniki-based duo turns its sound in alternate directions embracing even synthwave and (wait for it) live guitars and drums on the album-opener “Carnivore”.

The first 200 CD copies of “Inevitably Versatile” come in a hand-numbered 2CD limited edition with the bonus CD holding 3 tracks: “Godd”, “Lament”, “Witching Hour”.

You can already check 2 tracks below.

My job? Strip out the promo nonsense, verify what’s actually real, and decide which stories make the cut and which get tossed into the digital void. Outside the news filter bubble, I’m all in for quality sushi and helping raise funds for Ukraine’s ongoing fight against the modern-day axis of evil. Besides music I’m also an SEO and AI content flow specialist and have an interest in everything finance from stocks to crypto. There is music in everything!

Genre/Influences:
Dark-electro,
aggrotech.

Background/Info:
“Join
Us” is SynthAttack’s fourth album since the opening full length “To The Floor”
(2015). The band is still driven by the creative spirit of Martin Schindler.
“Join Us” features ten songs plus seven remixes by other artists.

Content:
SynthAttack
can be the best compared to an imaginary dance-ogre. The songs are boosted by
electro-adrenaline made by heavy, danceable kicks, cold electro sequences and
trance-like leads. The vocals feature this cavernous expression while a few
cuts reveal female backings. SynthAttack is the perfect fusion between
dark-electro and dance/trance music.

Remixes
have been accomplished by Aesthetic Perfection, Centhron, Agonoize, ES23,
Grendel, CygnosiC and Nachtmahr.

+
+ + : SynthAttack clearly composes music for the dancefloor. Each new opus
sounds as a sonic bomb to get fans into frenetic dance. It’s not that different
for “Join Us”, which is an invitation to move. The heavy, boosting kicks
together with the trance-like leads can’t leave club visitors enjoying
dark-electronics unmoved. The songs reflect constant power, which feels a bit like
a transcendental trip. Songs like “Join Us”, “Enjoy The Pain”, and “Addicted To
The Thrill” will definitely convince you from the band’s potential and dance
skills. Next to the new songs you also get an impressive list of famous
artists/remixers. I here have a little preference for the remix of “Final
salvation” by ES23.

–
– – : SynthAttack remains a kind of challenge. The fusion of dark-electronics
with some commercial-like trance leads is sometimes pretty risky and maybe a
bit cheap. I’m especially referring to “Final Salvation”, which reminds me of
the lead of Culture Beat’s mega-hit “Mr. Vain”. Despite of the great artists
invited to remix I don’t experience this section as a real bonus to the album.
The original songs are definitely better!

Conclusion:
SynthAttack
makes no prisoners blowing everything down! Music is their religion, the
dancefloor their temple to convince new adherents!

Best
songs: “Join Us”, “Enjoy The Pain”, “Addicted To The Thrill”, “Until The Dawn”,
“Final Salvation – ES23 Remix”, “Join Us – Aesthetic Perfection Remix”.

Rate:

(Pictures by Ari Rantanen.) The Finnish based dark-electro duo Miseria Ultima (Aleksi Martikainen on vocals and Kimmo Huhtala on synths) are back. They have just released their brand new single “Allegiance” this morning.

About their comeback the band says: “The time was more than perfect. The hurries have now ceased – at least in our personal lives. During the break we also had time to finish our second album, making some finishing touches. We are more than excited for this return; we are grateful that people still want to see us live and have waited patiently.”

The digital release of the new single will be handled by Inverse Records, which will also be handling the digital release of the yet to be announced second full length album. The physical version of the album will be released by Advoxya Records.

Miseria Ultima was formed in Finland, by Aleksi Martikainen and Kimmo Huhtala in 2016. The music of Miseria Ultima combines EBM and dark electro with some other electronic music ingredients. After forming Miseria Ultima they recorded the demo “Unfocus” and released it as a digital version in the beginning of 2017. Soon after they were signed by Advoxya Records. You can read an interview with Miseria Ultima right here as published in March 2018 on Side-Line.

Background/Info: Georg (Georgios) Psaroudakis created Cygnosic in 2007. Eleven years later he can look back at a respectable discography having released 6 studio album plus an album with remixes and a few EP’s. “Fire And Forget” was originally released in 2013 on Deathwatch Asia and now re-released with 3 extra songs.

Content: It’s an opportunity to rediscover this great piece of music on which Cygnosic illustrated great composing skills. The sound appears to be a sonic bridge between dark-electronics and EBM. The zombie-like vocals accentuate the obscure side of the music, which is however characterized by melodic leads. “Fire And Forget” is a danceable work revealing several attention grabbers.

Among the bonus songs I especially noticed the hard-sounding “Light” a stand out song.

+ + + : Greece definitely became a country with great dark-electro/EBM formations and Cygnosic definitely is one among the others. I like the offspring between dark-electro and EBM influences resulting in a highly danceable work carried by strong leads. There also is a more personal touch running through the music, which is mainly coming through by refreshing sound treatments and bleeping sequences. There also is one pretty cool bonus cut featured at this ‘extended version’ of “Fire And Forget”.

– – – : A few softer cuts, which are like little breaks aren’t the most convincing pieces of the work. I here refer to a song such as “The Drowning”. Next to one cool bonus song, both others left don’t really add an expected extra to the album.

Conclusion: This album clearly is a collector’s item as it has been limited to 150 CD-copies. So this is an album for the fans, but if you don’t know Cygnosic yet, this earlier work is quite interesting as well.

Best songs: “Crawl”, “The Darkness”, “Begin With Me”, “Escape”, “Greed”.

Rate: (7½).

Background/Info: Cygnosic is one of the numerous talented dark-electro acts from Greece. Driven by Georg Psaroudakis this solo-project has already been active since late 2006 and can look back at numerous successful albums.

Content: “Siren” is already the 6th album and again explores the darkest corners of electronic music. The work is characterized by hopping sequences and danceable rhythms. The typical icy-like bleeps and overwhelming leads create a great and somewhat obscure atmosphere, which is reinforced by the harsh vocals. A few cuts reveal some EBM elements as well plus some surprising technoid sounds.

+ + + : “Siren” doesn’t exactly take me by surprise as the sound is not innovative at all, but it is a great and accomplished piece of work. I like the obscure ambience hanging over the songs. Cygnosic sounds like a sonic bridge between dark-electronics and EBM. The songs are danceable and always captivating through the high sounding tones. It sounds sharp and tormenting so in the end you get the most essential elements dark-electronic music has to feature. “Siren” is an album that will be pleasing to the fans of Cygnosic. The digipak/digibook format is a great artistic creation and strictly limited to 300 copies.

– – – : My single reproach about this album is the lack of diversity. All the songs are pretty similar and I sometimes got the impression that when you’ve heard one song, you’ve heard them all. A bit more diversity in the sound canvas would definitely have resulted in a brilliant opus.

Conclusion: Cygnosic progressively became a recognized and respected formation from the dark-electronic scene. “Siren” is maybe not the best work of the band although dark-electro heads are gonna like it for sure!

Best songs: “Free”, “Survive”, “Aftermath”, “The Swarm”.

Rate: (7½).

Background/Info: One-man project Cygnosic can look back at a considerable discography featuring a few noticeable albums. Georg Psaroudakis released his last album “CygnosiC” in 2014. This is the 2nd EP taken from the album.

Content: The fans of the band will immediately recognize the solid debut song, which is the ‘album’ version. The “White”-version is another familiar cut totally transposed and empowered by guitar riffs.

We get 2 new versions consisting of a more pop-minded “Grey”-version and a remix by Rotersand. This is a great piece of progressive body-music featuring intelligent sound treatments and great danceable vibes.

+ + + : The original song “The Key” (cf. “Black”-version) is a cool dark-EBM driven cut carried by harsh vocals. The Rotersand-version is a real smasher for the typical raw sound treatments. This song will set dancefloors on fire.

– – – : Except the brilliant Rotersand-remix, this EP doesn’t really bring that new.

Conclusion: This EP appears to be food for the biggest fans of Cygnosic although the magic of Rotersand will maybe catch a wider audience. This is one good reason to purchase this release.

Best songs: “The Key – Rotersand”, “The Key – Black”.

Rate: (7).

Cygnosic is releasing a 4-track digital EP, “The Key”, including a Rotersand rework, but also an ultra-limited 10″ vinyl version. The single features the original “Black” version taken from the current album “CygnosiC” plus the “White” version from the CD2/LP2. This new EP version of “The Key” comes complete with the aforementioned rework by Rotersand plus a brand new “Grey” version by Georg Psaroudakis himself.

The single is pulled from the current album “CygnosiC” which was released as an 2LP colored vinyl in 4 different colour versions. There is also a limited edition of just 24 vinyl copies which comes on a black lathe-cut 10″ vinyl – with poster-insert, postcard download card – all presented in a plain black outer sleeve hand-embossed with the CygnosiC “CC” logo.

Both the digital and limited edition vinyl versions of “The Key” will be releaseed April 29th and are now available to pre-order right here at $3 and $25 respectively.
Content: “Nations Reborn” was simultaneously released with the re-issue of the “As Nations Decay”-album featuring an extra disc with an impressive load of remixes. The original album was released in 2013 and now gets a new boost with the extra remixes.

Notice by the way that the digital release features 3 extra songs. The main attraction of this album is the 9 previously unreleased remixes by mainly label mates. Other famous and recognized formations like Noisuf-X, Chainreactor and Alien Vampires contributed to this remix orgy as well.

I’m not a big fan of albums filled with remixes, but “Nations Reborn” is the exception to the rule. I think it’s mainly due to the great original songs by BlakOPz and the fine selection of talented formations. The remixers all tried to inject a personal note to the original song, which resulted in a fascinating listening.

The concept of this release (set up by the label) also consists of remixing all of the original songs of the album. The only exception at “Nations Reborn” is the absence of 2 songs that were composed together with another band (Sleetgrout and Nitro/Noise).

A few remixes like the ones by Aesthetic Perfection, Cryogenic Echelon and Alter Der Ruine were already previously released as bonus songs on the album. I have to admit that both remixes by Aesthetic Perfection and Cryogenic Echelon belong to the ultimate list of favorites.

But I also have to recommend the powerful astral vibes of the “#culturedelete”-remix by Cyferdyne. Another real smasher has been accomplished by Chainreactor, injecting a huge and irresistible ‘00ntz’ doses to “Turn Key Tyranny”.

Noisuf-X surprised me with a less powerful, yet intelligent electro-industrial remix of “Behind The Curtain”. “Business As Usual” has been remixed a rather enraged style by Cygnosic. Last, but not least I’ll end with the debut song of the album entitled “The Beginning”, which has been transformed by Sirus into a violent and somewhat hard-core version.

Ruinizer added their complex touch to “Thick As Thieves” while I globally expected a bit more out of the remixes by Alien Vampires and ESA”.

Conclusion: “Nations Reborn” stands for a rather ‘hard’ work featuring multiple great remixes, which are mainly dealing with EBM-related music. It might have been cool and really innovative to discover remixes by bands from totally different music genres, but that’s just my personal taste.

Best songs: “#culturedelete – Cyferdyne Remix”, “Before The Rust – Cryogenic Echelon Remix”, “As Nations Decay – Aesthetic Perfection Remix”, “Turn Key Tyranny- (Chainreactor Remix”.

Content: The Cyferdyne trio reactivates their “Keep Your Silence”-album with this “Break Your Silence”-album. The 2nd full length by the UK band got a successful response from its original release in 2014. Digital Audio World has now re-released the original album together with an extra disc filled with remixes. This extra disc is also available as digital album revealing 3 extra remixes (which have been added to the main disc of the CD release as well).

“Break Your Silence” reveals 9 previously unreleased remixes by bands like C-Lekktor, Die Sektor, Ginger Snap5, Terrolokauts ao. The bonus remixes at the digital format have been accomplished by Assemblage 23, Aesthetic Perfection and Phosgore.

The first part reveals a few interesting cuts, but no real potential hits. Panic Lift did an interesting rough pop inspired job at the remix of “Fracture” while “Visions” has been remixed by Terrolokaust in a kind of rock-pop style. The guitar riffs inject this rock-minded input.

Aesthetic Perfection remains a real genius formation and without a shadow of a doubt one of the growing sensations in the scene. Their techno-body remix of “Numb” is an absolute masterpiece.

Referring to masterpieces, the second part of the work reveals a few more outstanding remixes. Cygnosic, Ginger Snap5 and of course the powerful ‘rave’ minded remix of “Numb” by Noisuf-X are pure lust for the dancefloors, but the best is yet to come.

Assemblage 23 definitely deserves to get an award for the most inspiriting remix, transposing “Jigsaw” in to a great vintage-minded version while remaining totally dancefloor minded. This is one of the best Assemblage 23-remixes in history!

I also have to mention the great remixing skills of Phosgore, which again confirms to be one of the most talented artists from the Noisuf-X class. “Cables And Codes” sounds now like a pumping industrial rave-pop song. Last, but not least, C-Lekktor also confirms his growing talent remixing “Disease” into a heavy, haunting dark-electro version.

Conclusion: There’s a great electro diversity running throughout the remixes, but it especially must be a real pleasure for Cyferdyne to get such inspiring remixes from most of the bands.

Best songs: “Jigsaw – Assemblage 23 Remix”, “Cables And Codes – Phosgore Remix”, “Numb – Aesthetic Perfection Remix”, “Disease – C-Lekktor Remix”, “Numb – Noisuf-X Remix”.

Content: The recently released “Dying Starts”-album by the Greek combo Technolorgy seems to have received a considerable success. I’m not that surprised about the positive response as this work revealed multiple electro-pop highlights.

One of the main tracks on the album is without a shadow of a doubt “Damsels In Distress” so it’s a rather logical choice the band has chosen this song as title track for the new EP (the 2nd taken from the album).

The original version takes off and simply confirms its solid pop potential, which is mainly carried by a superb, catchy tune. It’s a well-crafted and polished electro-pop song with a little dark shadow all over it.

We next get 2 remixes by the upcoming Ginger Snap5. I especially recommend their “Club Mix”, which mixes elements of electro-trance and the original pop vibes of the song. The other remix is somewhat wafting and more into reverie.

You might have discovered the Cygnosic remix at the limited CD-version of “Dying Stars”. It’s an enjoyable remix; nothing less, nothing more.

Last, but not least we get an exclusive B-side song entitled “Femme Fatale”. The title sounds pretty sexy while the song is just a cool composition on which Technolorgy reveal their great sound treatments and multiple studio effects.

Conclusion: “Damsels In Distress” is a damn good choice for an EP title-song, but I expected a bit more from the remixes. The original song remains the best one!

Best songs: “Damsels In Distress”, “Damsels In Distress – Ginger Snap5 Club Remix”.

Rate: (DP:7)DP.
