Genre/Influences: Folk, Ambient, Experimental, Chanson.

Format: Digital, CD.

Background/Info: Les Paradisiers is a project driven by Demian Nada (Spain) from Ô Paradis and Thomas Nöla (USA) from Petrograde ao. They already released several productions together, but “Indian Summer” is their first new album since “When We Had The Moon” (2013). While previous productions were released by Disques De Lapin, this is their first work released on Wrotycz Records.

Content: “Indian Summer” has been introduced as the duo ‘board a train to endless megacities, through shadowy jungles, to another elusive utopia’. The travelling aspect is easily recognizable. The work is filled with mystic atmospheres reminding distant places in the East, but still the universe of Ô Paradis, which is probably accentuated by the Catalonian and Spanish sung songs. But the voyage let us also discover songs sung in English. There’s a melting pot of influences, now creating a psychedelic sphere and then music reminding me of ‘chanson’. The use of acoustic instruments reinforces the atmospheric part hanging over the work. Notice by the way that Rosa sole (also known from her involvement with Ô Paradis) did some vocals on one of the songs.

+ + + : The main strength from the album emerges from the use of acoustic instruments injecting a true authentic touch to the work. It creates this sonic melting pot between Folk, Ambient and Chanson. I always have liked listening to the magic of accordion and that’s what a song as “The Road To Koovagam” stands for. I also like the diversity running through the work, which is reinforced by the different languages of the vocals.

– – – : The album is an invitation to dream away and visit imaginary, magic places, but I unfortunately didn’t come across an absolute highlight!

Conclusion: Les Paradisiers is back on track with a pure sonic trip bringing us rest and hope…

Best songs: “The Road To Koovagam”, “Teresa’s Purgatorium”, “The Ghat”.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
