Electronic duo Immersion – formed by Colin Newman of Wire and Malka Spigel of Minimal Compact – have announced a new album titled “WTF??”, scheduled for release on September 26, 2025, via their own label ~swim.

The announcement is accompanied by the release of the lead single “Use It Don’t Lose It”, available now on all major streaming platforms. The video, created by the band alongside Ben Newman, can be viewed below.

Commenting on the single, the duo says: “‘Use It Don’t Lose It’ is an expression of us both together, saying the same thing for ourselves and for others. The words are so direct they need no explanation. Anyone could join in with the chanting!”

The eight-track album features four instrumentals and four vocal tracks. It was created after Immersion’s return to live performance following recent UK and US tours. According to the band, “WTF??” captures a reaction to contemporary global instability, aiming to blend unease with hope through minimal yet melodic electronic compositions.

A special listening party and live conversation hosted by John Robb will be held at The Actors in Brighton on October 3. The event will be broadcast live via Slack City radio.

About Immersion

Immersion was founded by Colin Newman (Wire) and Malka Spigel (Minimal Compact) in the mid-1990s. Initially focused on instrumental ambient and electronic experiments, the project evolved into a consistent outlet for the duo’s collaborative explorations in minimalism, groove-based electronica, and audiovisual work.

After a hiatus, Immersion resumed activity in the mid-2010s with a renewed focus on layered synth-based compositions and live performances.

The duo are also behind the Nanocluster project, a collaborative platform involving artists such as Tarwater, Laetitia Sadier, Ulrich Schnauss, and Ronald Lippok.

“WTF??” is the first full Immersion studio album since their collaborative phase with Nanocluster and marks a return to their core duo line-up, with drummer Matt Schulz contributing on selected tracks.

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
