Genre/Influences: Gothic, dark-wave.

Background/Info: “Another Winter” is the tenth full length album released by the French collective Collection D’Arnell-Andrea. The band was set up in 1986 by Jean-Christophe D’Arnell and became a renowned formation during the 90s and early millennium years. They were one of the flag holders from the ethereal label Prikosnovénie, but the band’s last album “Vernes-Monde” was released now nine years ago (2010). “Another Winter” marks the resurrection of the band with a conceptual theme around mourning.

Content: Collection D’Arnell-Andrea has been always a unique formation in its genre; a genre they’re probably the only ones to deal with. Definitely inspired by the darkest new-wave productions from the 80s, the music always has revealed an authentic touch because of the use of real instruments. “Another Winter” doesn’t sound that different, but probably more diversified than previous productions. It’s a symbiotic union between electronics –and yes, this album is more electronic than we’re used to hearing from them, piano, cello, viola, guitar and last, but not least the fragile timbre of voice of Chloé St. Liphard. She sings in English and French while there’s only one single song featuring male vocals.

The songs are covered with a graceful taste of melancholia, accentuating the darkness, which always has been the muse of this formation.

+ + + : The main point of satisfaction is the comeback from this legendary French formation. I’ve always been deeply touched by the artistic creation of CDAA; the mix of authentic instruments accentuating the melancholic moods in their work together with the fragility of the vocals is absolutely unique. It becomes a kind of sacred rite, driven by the fragile singing of Chloé St. Liphard. Her timbre of voice perfectly stands for the main theme of this work linked to the vulnerability of life. This work sounds like the band has never disappeared. They deliver a refreshing opus like no other band can produce. Poetry rhymes with melancholy! Lyrics and music together both wear the label of sadness, maybe depression, but still artistic refinement! Most of the songs are there to listen to, but “The Grief Of Waves” also is a song you can dance on.

– – – : There’s music for dancefloors and music to listen to. I sometimes regret Collection D’Arnell-Andrea never made me more dance, but in the end, the main point is to get touched by music!

Conclusion: This album has something of a resurrection and also a consecration as they’re now signed to one of the leading labels of this alternative dark scene. Collection D’Arnell-Andrea is back with a beautiful work and more than a relief, this album feels as a blessing! Respect!

Best songs: “The Grief Of Waves”, “Le Jour Venu”, “Les Blés-Océans”, “Les Bancs De Sable”, “Les Périssoires”.

I have been working for over 30 years with Side-line as the main reviewer. My taste is eclectic, uncoventional and I prefer to look for the pearls, even if the bands are completely unknown, thus staying loyal to the Side-Line philosophy of nurturing new talents.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
