(From our correspondent Gordon S. in Israel.) What was written in the stars for weeks but denied by the band and management has now also become reality. After launching multiple messages in the international and israeli press that the band would for sure come to Tel Aviv for a concert for which already 40.000 tickets were sold, the band has now finally backed out of the event. According to the band it would be the technical staff refusing to fly over. The least one can say is that there are some serious questions marks to be put next to this very late decision. Why did the management and band continue to say the band would perform? Why would the technical staff react so late when they were supposedly informed about the concert taking place anyhow? Obviously the first reactions from Israeli fans is not really positive, here are some we gathered in the past few hours: (Doron K. from Tel Aviv) "Why have they been lying to us for such a long time? Do they think we are retarded?", (Sharon T. from Bat Yam) "The band has made a very easy choice, they can sit nicely in a plane, do a concert here and then fly back. We get tons of dynamite flown over to us from Hezbollah and still we continue our lives. Who is taking the biggest risk here?", (Eben Y. from Petah Tiqwa) "All I can say is that this is disgusting. An insult to us. They earn tons of money on our backs and still can't find the effort to support us, they better play in Iran then...". Other reactions were less extreme but the message remains the same: why was this decision stretched over such a long period?

Posted by: M_Alex on Aug 07, 06 | 2:19 am Now call me old-fashioned, but a gathering of 40,000 people during wartime isn't the best of ideas, nor am i surprised by the fact that the crew doesn't want to go into a warzone. Sure, it would be a bit a relief for the people down there to go to a concert, but a foolish one, as it could have easily gone awry. Especially since it has been said that tel aviv is targeted for attack. |
Posted by: billybob3165 on Aug 02, 06 | 11:33 pm I think the real danger in this whole thing, is that they could be playing while a Hezbollah fired missile flys into the crowd or something, really I value the band and their decisions, but I mean, 1+1 does equal 2 if you know math, and yeah, the concert might not be played there for quite sometime in fact |
Posted by: gonzohunter on Aug 02, 06 | 6:54 pm Is really a surprise that they can't get the crew to go into a warzone to put on a rock show? Aren't there more important things for the Israelis to worry about then hearing Depeche Mode? |
Posted by: djgyn on Aug 02, 06 | 3:40 pm It's always disappointing when bands cancel long-awaited shows and tours, but the current situation in Israel certainly can't make the band and crew of Depeche Mode comfortable. They are entertainers, and though playing a gig during this time would perhaps be symbolic and provide a much-needed release for their Israeli fanbase, it's unreasonable to expect any artist to risk their life or the lives of their crew. |
Posted by: on Aug 02, 06 | 12:15 pm Why is that question even being asked? Look at the current news to find out the answer. It only takes one link in the chain to bottle out and the whole thing falls apart. |
