Depeche Mode to cancel Pinkpop, London, Hamburg and Dusseldorf dates
Pinkpop boss Jan Smeets has been quoted yesterday evening by the Belgian press agency Belga saying that Depeche Mode will most probably not be perfoming at this year's Pinkpop festival in Holland. Smeets says he's trying to book Oasis or The Prodigy as a replacement act. The Prodigy however announced on their Twitter account that they won't come to Pinkpop. In any case, the tickets for Pinkpop will not be refunded.

Update: It's official, as we announced two days ago more shows are now canceled or postponed including London, Pinkpop, Hamburg, the 2 Dusseldorf shows plus the first Leizpig date. An official announcement has been made today confirming what Side-Line reported yesterday morning. The band will normally resume its activities in Leipzig on Monday, June 8th.
Several shows that were canceled will be rescheduled or simply canceled for good, but that info will be made official on due time.

This means that the London O2 show is postponed and will be rescheduled to a new date, which will be announced shortly. Tickets purchased will remain valid. Depeche Mode's performance at the Pinkpop Festival in Landgraaf is cancelled. The show at the HSH Nordbank Arena in Hamburg will now take place on July 1st. Tickets purchased remain valid. The shows at Dusseldorf LTU Arena on June 4th and 5th will be rescheduled, however the exact dates cannot be determined until the 2nd Bundesliga releases its new schedule. Dates for the rescheduled shows are expected to be announced by early July. Ticket holders should retain their tickets for the rescheduled shows. The June 7th show however in Leipzig must be cancelled due to doctors' orders, the June 8th show will occur as planned. Tickets for the cancelled June 7th show may be exchanged for tickets to either the June 8th show in Leipzig or the June 10th show in Berlin (availability permitting) at the relevant box office.

This news article will be updated the moment we get more news.

Update: In a response to Limburger.nl Smeets said that Dave Gahan had undergone surgery in New York during which a tumor was discovered in his bladder. Doctors decided it would be irresponsible to keep on touring in these conditions. This news was confirmed today. We wish Dave Gahan a speedy recovery.

As we reported before, the lack of communication starts backfiring to the band. More and more fans are complaining about the complete lack of news. Here are just a few of many negative reactions pulled from the official Depeche Mode forum:

"Please make an announcement and stop wasting our time, people have tickets, flights, hotels etc booked. I understand and appreciate that Mr. Gahan has been unwell and if that is still the case then there is nothing any of us can do. But what we can do is save our money just in time if the 02 in London is cancelled."

"I couldn't agree more. Total silence from week to week, then a bunch of cancellations is no way to manage a major tour, or treat fans. Personally I feel very let down by the DM organisation as it feels like we are being treated with contempt. This is how false rumours start. Best wishes to Dave and hope you are well soon."

"Mmm yes a bit of a PR disaster really. It must be difficult for all concerned but they (the management) seem to have shot themselves in the foot somewhat. Any kind of update would be better than being left in limbo like this. No wonder rumours abound - the only way to stop them is to issue some kind of message about how Dave is doing. We don't want to see his medical chart for crying out loud."

"We will only get our tax minus a hefty cancellation fee back from our flights. We aint getting any statement tonight Paul. Like football fans, the paying fan is way down the list of priorities!"

"I posted a thread about the lack of information and was told i'm not allowed!!! WTF is going on here? Oh and god forbid if you ask how dave is!! They can scrap the whole tour now....i just hope daves ok. Oh and we're not allowed to care."

"Just because we've spent money, tons of money, to buy tix, to book train and hotel. Because even if we are fans, we have a life, a job, children... Because of that, we need to know what we'll be able to do /or not to do the next 4-5 days !!!!"

And the list goes on and on. Side-Line did point out from the early beginning that the lack of communication is and would be a serious problem.

Do you think that the matter has been properly handled or do you think that you have not been well informed? Let us know in the comment field below.

Nevermind having a pop at Bernard/S-L.

It's journalists like this total cunt Luke Slater (aka Joe Diddly) and his shit attitude that stinks:

DM cancelling shows, so be it. Rather have someone in a fit state of health to continue with their lives in a decent way, rather than driving themselves to the brink of something going really, really wrong, they're just humans after all.

So Side-Line has taken a real holier-than-thou stance in this whole commenting thing and doesn't like the sound of people truly expressing themselves and their anger at this unfortunate state of DM, to the point that your deleting comments because Side-Line doesn't like what people have to say. Here's a tip: a) Don't ask for peoples opinions and b) Disable the comments area, so that people can't have an opinion. Not very smart Side-Line people.

I'm grateful for all the advanced information Side-Line provides, the entire situation with Dave's health was left for too long in the dark, and official announcements should have been made relaying Dave's condition and progress.

I'm very relieved to hear it's not as bad as we all feared, and now Dave can get on with recovery and resuming the tour in due course.

Best wishes to DM.

I have been a fan since the early days and I have seen them on all but their early days tours. In the days before the internet, communication was as good as it could have been for those times. However in today's modern world there is simply no excuse for the lack of info at the moment. I have to travel from Leeds to London with my wife and her sister leaving our two young boys with her parents and as yet I can't commit to anything!! Come on, quash the rumours and keep all us devoted fans in the picture please. The top priority is for the welfare of Dave and I sincerely wish he is ok - so please, keep us all informed.

Posted by: deZeption on May 28, 09 | 5:55 am

I just hope that DM take into concideration the fact that it starting to backfiring on them.

Everyone can tell that the band members aren't to blame - but this deal will of course have a negative effect on the DM reputation.

On a personal note, I am more interested in Dave getting well than getting my money back. Sure, I would love to attend to the concert. But if the man's unwell, then for me it's 'force majeure' really. Dave first, money second.

But of course the management sure could handle thing better ;-)

It's time to get some answers. Does anyone know who DM's tour management company is and/or have any contact information for them?

Posted by: laDMgirl on May 27, 09 | 11:36 pm

It's unfortunate that the management is more interested in filling their pockets with Dave's money without any regard for his health. There is no other explanation as to why they would not release the whole, full story. Not a bright business move anyway...they know how devoted the fans are and we would much rather hear the truth and let Dave recover in peace so that we can look forward to a concert later in the future. Fans are so tired of this incessant "covering up"! What's the purpose? If he has cancer, he has a long hard road ahead and he will not be able to perform. If he has relapsed again, he is in for some treatments and will need some time to recover and regain his strength. In any case, he cannot perform so why lead the fans on. We all have lives and need to plan accordingly. We will be fans no matter what Dave is going through and will wait for him till the end!

The band's management are doing a terrible job at handling this (they did a better job at managing things when he was on heroin).

I hate to say this but, I think the increasing silence regarding Dave's health means the prognosis is really, really, really bad.

Let's all hope Dave pulls through.

Posted by: feori on May 27, 09 | 8:27 pm

I wish Dave the best and hope he gets better soon - I really do.

But I have to agree that the management is handling this horribly - to do this to the longtime fans, many who have been there from the beginning - especially in a worldwide climate as we have today, is just completely and totally irresponsible.

Posted by: DarkVince on May 27, 09 | 7:57 pm

Truly sad rumours...If the info is confirmed, no doubt most of shows will be cancelled.
I agree to say, the communication from the band's management is lame...

Posted by: Side-Line on May 27, 09 | 7:26 pm

Side-Line is not about calling people names, we leave that to others.

Posted by: dmguy on May 27, 09 | 7:22 pm

Wow...pretty lame that you deleted the comments. Just when I thought I found a new site to regularly visit

Posted by: Side-Line on May 27, 09 | 7:07 pm

The comments that were really insulting have been deleted. Keep it civilised please. No need to call people names.

Posted by: blueoktober on May 27, 09 | 7:03 pm

Really? You deleted my post (and otehrs) defending Side-Line after you were attacked by Peter? For real? This puts you in the same league as him. Very disappointed.

Posted by: IwhoHaveNothing on May 27, 09 | 6:26 pm

The official Depeche Mode message board is absolutely terrible - moderated by a bunch of trumped up Mods who dish out bans to posters like they are going out of fashion and delete legitimate threads / posts on a whim. I can honestly say I have never seen a more unprofessionally moderated board ever - absolutely no consistency and they treat members like children - constantly chastising them and making up "rules" as they go along. They seem to have missed the point completely of a Message Board which should be the exchanging of views, opinions and to enter into a free dialogue with other members. The last place any real DM fan should bother going is the Official site and especially the Message Board.

This internecine war between Moders would end in a second if only Kessler, EMI/Mute et al actually issued something other than a vague statement once a week. Naturally we're concerned about Dave but hardly any of us have the funds to throw away on airfares and hotels we won't use. I've taken the decision this evening to cancel my Paris hotel as I have a friend travelling with me, but not attending the gig, who needs to make other plans. I just couldn't keep him waiting and I hate having to consider something as grubby as money when Dave is potentially very unwell.

Posted by: nicki on May 27, 09 | 5:02 pm

Cannot 'Enjoy the Silence' all we want is 'Peace' of mind. We fans 'Just Can't Get Enough" information and are 'In Sympathy' with Dave and wish him well but it's a 'Fragile Tension'. It must just be a 'Question of Time' before our 'Precious' band make their 'Come Back'
A worried fan who has tickets for Pinkpop and Glasgow!

Posted by: Camila Laporga on May 27, 09 | 4:43 pm

Well I'm a fan of DM, I knew about this new because in DMargentina fan club it appear like a new topic, I feel sad because of Dave's health, I think it is more important than the concerts...

xoxo .-Camila-.

Just for your info guys, the comment was not aboute Home's Peter... just to make that clear.

Posted by: blueoktober on May 27, 09 | 2:36 pm

I love you Side-Line! Thank you for stating the truth and helping out the fans.

Posted by: music_fan on May 27, 09 | 2:31 pm

I am a big fan of DM's music and I am sorry if Dave is unwell, but I do not know him personally so it's not exactly on my mind, day to day.

What is on my mind is the responsibility that the band's management has to the fans. We live around the world and spend a lot of money on tickets and travelling to shows.

If you have invested in something, you have the right to complain if you do not receive goods or a service.

Professional people plan for worst case scenarios and know what to do, in a crisis.

Posted by: dmguy on May 27, 09 | 1:53 pm

We all respect Dave's health...but this has been going on for weeks. And I like hundreds of others are very loyal fans who spend a lot of $$ travelling to shows and would like to have some type of update so maybe we can cancel hotels without incurring penalties.

A simple Dave is feeling better...but we are awaiting doctors approval to see if we can proceed with these shows. We hope to have an answer by ________...would ease a lot of tension. They do this with athletes ALL OF THE TIME!

Posted by: Neuroticpuppy on May 27, 09 | 8:23 am

There is a situation called "life", and sometimes something happens that changes everything you thought was the way things are supposed to be. Perhaps Dave is still in a very serious condition, and the agencies involved don't know how to deal with the possibility of canceling everything, if there is still hope of saving half the shows.
However, at this point if they do know that up to ten dates will be cancelled, then I think they should have to drop the tour or start setting up postponements in order to not have to give back all the ticket money. Obviously this kind of thing has never happened before, and there is so much riding on such a major tour for all involved, that no one knows exactly how to handle this.

Only whiney people complain and make others responsible for their disappointments. It is a part of human nature, but then you move on with your lives anyway. Wait and see. with sympathy..
