Sierra – Gone (EP – Lazerdiscs Records)

Background/Info: Annelise Morel aka Sierra is a French female artist/producer hailing from Paris. She released this EP featuring five songs plus four remixes last year. It is the second EP released by Sierra.
Content: The french label Lazerdiscs Records is devoted to cinematic electro formats. Sierra is clearly inspired by this kind of production, but the work also reveals a strong EBM influence. The tracks are well-crafted, elaborated and achieved with some spoken like sampling effects. The remixes have been made by Toutant, Neus, Roüge and Hippo. We here get some very danceable and even transcendental edits.
+ + + : I think we’re not used to hearing this kind of production, mixing EBM and even some trance and techno elements together with cinematographic music. The result sounds ambient and rhythmic-like. I especially like both debut tracks for the addition of spoken effects and the solid EBM approach on top of the work. But the best tracks are some of the remixes and I especially have to mention the heavy danceable and trance-driven title song remixed by Neus. Other attention grabbers are the remixes of “Leftover” by Roüge and “Unbroken” by Hippo.
– – – : The remixes are definitely more convincing than the original edits and that’s always a pity. I’m less convinced by the most cinematic-orientated cuts such as “Leftover” and “A Matter Of Time”.
Conclusion: This EP is an interesting discovery revealing a less familiar EBM side, but especially the remixes of the EP are worthy of examination.
