Klaus Gratzel started Rotoskop over 20 years ago, but after a long hiatus he has become quite active again in recent years. This year he has already released his second consecutive album on Infacted Recordings.

It’s not easy to pigeonhole this artist. His influences are rich and diverse: some songs sound heavy and hard-hitting, while others are dreamy and slow. At times I hear echoes of KMFDM bursting at the seams, while other tracks seem to draw inspiration from Depeche Mode. The result is an extremely versatile body of work, where Electro-Rock regularly surfaces and even touches of Psychedelia appear. This is not an album that can be easily grasped, nor is it a bite-sized piece of music. Personally, I lean toward the heavier tracks, but the strength of Rotoskop lies in the fact that there’s something here for everyone.

I wouldn’t immediately call this an absolute triumph, but rather a bold and challenging work. (Rating:7).

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
