My Love Kills – Mors Nobis (Digital/CD Album – Progress Productions)
On the fourth album by the Swedish-French duo My Love Kills, the title already hints at what lies ahead. “Mors Nobis”—loosely translated as ‘death to us’—is announced as the fourth and final album from Fredrik Sigeback and Viconte Vampyr Arkames. The pair is apparently shifting focus to other projects and sees this album as a fitting conclusion to their six-year collaboration.
Since their magical debut, the duo has crafted a dark, atmospheric Electro sound, with sonic treatments that have often evoked the spirit of Skinny Puppy’s early years. That remains true here, though My Love Kills is far from being a mere imitation. The production’s strength lies in its brooding atmospheres and soaring string elements, paired with intense, passionate, and haunting vocals—delivered entirely in French. There are occasional Cinematic tracks, and at times, a clear EBM influence surfaces, but overall, the band remains rooted in a hybrid of various Electro subgenres.
In my view, this final album isn’t quite the duo’s magnum opus. There’s a lack of clear climaxes or standout moments in the songwriting. Still, it’s a shame that My Love Kills is calling it quits, as their unique sound and identity made them a compelling voice within the darker corners of the Electronic music scene. (Rating:7).
