István Gazdag remains an extraordinarily productive artist, releasing a wide range of material every year. For this new release from his flagship project, First Aid 4 Souls, he collaborated with what he refers to as ‘dark divas’—in other words, exclusively female vocalists. Aux Animaux, Emke (Black Nail Cabaret), Marita Volodina (Stridulum, Blood Tears After), Ruth García Núñez de Arenas (From Hell), Aleksandra Rempel, Kristal Ann (Paradox Obscur), Linda Daemon, Celina, and Valanaïs are the chosen few, appearing across a total of 11 tracks.

First Aid 4 Souls remains firmly rooted in EBM influences, always more elaborate and complex than the average production. This familiar foundation is now enhanced with softer—at times even Pop-oriented—elements that generally suit the featured female vocalists particularly well. Nevertheless, the result remains a powerful body of work, driven by an exceptional interplay between the music and the singers, who occasionally add a subtle sensual edge. The project’s brand of EBM is as irresistible as ever, with several potential hits waiting to be discovered.

I’ve said it before, and this release proves it once again: this Hungarian artist is among the most underrated and under-recognized names in EBM today. (Rating:8½).

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
