Behind the US electronic project Cut.Rate.Box we find G. Wygonik.
About Cut.Rate.Box
Cut.Rate.Box is a US electronic project founded by G. Wygonik in Florida in spring 1989. The project began as a solo live act and later expanded with additional members, including Shred and Chuck Kelly.
It all started with the “self-untitled” cassette, followed by a CD built from older and newer tracks titled “Distemper” (1994). The early cassette material also led to compilation placements via Permission Magazine and Industrial Nation Magazine. Wygonik moved to Chicago in 1992 after encouragement from Pigface touring sound mixer Jonathan Formula, then later relocated again and settled in New Orleans.
A longer collaboration phase began in New Orleans when Wygonik met Clint Sand, then guitarist for Ex-Voto. The duo released “Blueiceblack” in 1999 and signed first to Gashed! Records before later working with WTII Records in the US and Accession Records in Europe. Tracks also appeared on compilations including “Industrial Nation: CD Sound Compilation Vol. 1” (1994), “TV Terror: Felching A Dead Horse” (1997), “Nachtschwärmer 3” (2000), “Prospective Music Magazine Volume 5” (2000), and “Accession Records Volume One” (2001).
After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Wygonik relocated to Austin, Texas and returned to Cut.Rate.Box as a solo project. In 2017, material from the archives surfaced as the CD EP “Xenophobe” via WTII Records.
The project resumed new releases in 2025 with the single “Reel Life”, released on June 20, 2025. Alfa Matrix issued the four-track “Luxury Anxiety EP” on September 18, 2025 with the remix follow-up “Catastrophes? Absurdity! EP” arriving in December 2025.
After Hurricane Katrina, Wygonik relocated to Austin, Texas in 2005, and the project returned to a solo setup. In 2017 the “Xenophobe” EP got released including a few previously unreleased tracks.
In 2025, Alfa Matrix launched the “Luxury Anxiety EP” which represented the real return for the project. It’s now followed by “Catastrophes? Absurdity!” as a companion remix EP.
Chief editor of Side-Line – which basically means I spend my days wading through a relentless flood of press releases from labels, artists, DJs, and zealous correspondents. My job? Strip out the promo nonsense, verify what’s actually real, and decide which stories make the cut and which get tossed into the digital void. Outside the news filter bubble, I’m all in for quality sushi and helping raise funds for Ukraine’s ongoing fight against the modern-day axis of evil.
Since you’re here …
… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.
Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.
If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
