“IX” is the debut album by the South African band Blvd Hvnny. Originally started as a solo project, it has since evolved into a five-piece band. This debut contains nine tracks.

The opening track breathes the spirit of the ’80s, blending shimmering synths with guitar and a deep, seductive vocal. The New-Wave influence soon shifts into a dark, elegant fusion of New-Wave and Chanson. Hints of Nick Cave are clearly present, which makes the inclusion of a highly successful cover of “The Weeping Song” feel perfectly natural. Another surprise is a haunting rendition of Yazoo’s “Winter Kills”.

The songs are strikingly varied yet remain strongly interconnected. Whether the mood turns wilder, heavier, or leans toward a more Pop-driven sound with a subtle Depeche Mode flavor, the album never loses its grip. Guest vocalists contribute along the way, enriching both the diversity and the overall quality of the record.

All in all, “IX” is an enthralling listen from start to finish—an album I can highly recommend. (Rating:8).

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
