Chemnitz-based project At Sea Compilations has released the thirteenth volume of its melancholic acoustic series with the compilation “Snowflakes 13“, out digitally via Bandcamp. The annual set once again focuses on dark folk, neoclassical and singer-songwriter material in a stripped-down, acoustic-oriented framework.

About ‘Snowflakes 13’

The first “Snowflakes” edition appeared in December 2012 as a digital compilation oriented toward atmospheric dark folk, neoclassical and related styles, with later volumes expanding the scope while keeping an acoustic, mood-driven focus.

“Snowflakes 13” follows a three-part musical structure. “The concept behind this year’s Snowflakes edition follows a musical three-part structure. While the first third is characterized by various dark folk songs, the second third is dominated by neoclassical pieces. The last third returns to dark and neofolk, which can also be a little more experimental here and there,” At Sea Compilations says. Around a third of the songs are instrumental, aiming to create “more space for different soundscapes” with a mix of established artists, newcomers and lesser-known acts.

The line-up brings together 32 projects from Germany, the USA, France, Poland, Lithuania, Sweden, Finland, Canada, Hungary, Italy, Belgium, Israel, Scotland, England, Ireland, Australia and Ukraine. Alongside newer names, the compilation includes a track by Canadian metal cellist Raphael Weinroth-Browne, a song from the Autumn Tears album “Crown of the Clairvoyant” featuring Ataraxia vocalist Francesca Nicoli, the Athelas project by Empyrium singer Thomas Helm, and Trees At Night, a collaboration between Skaldir (Ash of Ashes, Elane, Thalinor) and Kai Sattelkau (Depression, Green Machine). Further contributions come from German folk projects Zwischenlichten and Mansions in the Sea, French avant-folk musician Sophia Djebel Rose, US-based project Nechochwen and Polish acts Ols and Greta Bobinaitė among others.

About At Sea Compilations

At Sea Compilations is a Germany-based compilation project run from Chemnitz. The project has been active since 2012 and focuses on free or low-cost downloadable compilations featuring independent and underground artists from various dark-adjacent genres.

From the start, At Sea Compilations has used Bandcamp as its main distribution hub, curating themed series such as “Snowflakes”, “La Danse Macabre”, “Night Vibes” and, more recently, “Moondance”.

As of November 2025, the Bandcamp page lists 56 releases under the At Sea Compilations banner, including “Snowflakes 13”, “La Danse Macabre 18”, “Moondance” and “Night Vibes 5”, with earlier entries covering a broad range of underground music from dark folk and neoclassical to other alternative and atmospheric forms. Organisation of the “Snowflakes” series is credited to Axel Meßinger, who is the central curator, with mastering on the current edition handled by Danijel Zambo.

The project also explicitly defines its stance on production methods: “Our compilations are 100% free of AI ‘music’. Just real music by real humans.”
