Ashtoreth & Forestaal – Axis (Digital Album – Ashtoreth & Forestaal)

Last year, the Belgian solo projects Ashtoreth (Peter Verwimp) and Forestaal (Timo Jacobs) also developed this work alongside the album “Vein”. “Axis” was recorded live in the studio in a single take, with a healthy dose of improvisation.

The track runs for almost 40 minutes and, while it may sound as if several pieces have been stitched together, there is a strong sense of continuity, as the sections flow naturally into one another. The sound remains deeply Ritual, constructed from an impressive arsenal of tones, noises, and effects. These are complemented by percussion, vocal fragments, and passages reminiscent of throat singing. The overall atmosphere is dark and at times unsettling, generating powerful and evocative visual sensations.

“Axis” is a fascinating collaboration by two artists who clearly understand and complement each other exceptionally well. Both “Vein” and “Axis” are highly recommended. (Rating:8).

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading Side-Line Magazine than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can - and we refuse to add annoying advertising. So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

Side-Line’s independent journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we want to push the artists we like and who are equally fighting to survive.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. For as little as 5 US$, you can support Side-Line Magazine – and it only takes a minute. Thank you.
