C/A/T is the harsh industrial techno project of Ben Arp, helped in the studio and with live performance assistance from Kat Clarke. Their track, “Smashed V2”, from their most recent release, the “ATP”’ EP, has been a big club hit both in Europe and in his native US. C/A/T are currently in the studio putting the finishing touches to their next full-length album “Point of no return”, due for release in May. Expect some subtle changes from the usual C/A/T dance floor shaking techno industrial noise on this release. Check out the sound clip for the new track, “Your dead to me”, posted on C/A/Ts’ Myspace page. Based in California USA, he also owns Crunch Pod Records. The label is home to industrial experimental acts such as Autoclav1.1, Manufactura and Caustic amongst others. Ben also has a idm/clitch project called Disclosure, and is currently working on the project’s second full length release. In this interview he talks about C/A/T and the forthcoming release, Disclosure and Crunch Pod Records amongst other things. (By Stefan Davey)
SL. You have a new album coming out in the near future called “Point of no return”. What can we expect from this album, because the new track “Your dead to me”, posted up on the Internet, suggests a departure from the techno industrial sound you would normally associate with C/A/T.
B. We’re trying something a little different on this next CD, and I guess that track is a bit difficult to compare the whole album to because it’s not going to all sound like that one. The one thing we are going to do differently that is not reflected in that track you referenced, is that we are going to be adding vocals to the songs, which is something we haven’t really done before. That will be a big change to the sound in general I think.
SL. The album “The prisoner” and the “World wide totalitarian state” EP conveyed specific themes, can you talk about what influences C/A/T both musically and visually?
B. Those two releases, we where going with not necessarily an anti government, but more of an introspective look at what been going on in the world in general the last five years or so, like the war in Iraq, trying to reflect the mood that people here in the United States had developed. And that reflected in the sound of those two particular releases, than the later stuff we’ve been working on.
SL. How did your clitch/idm project Disclosure come about?
B. This was more of an experiment; the first recordings became a previous C/A/T release. I thought what am I going to do with this project I’ve started? So I decided a more clitchy type sound that I hadn’t explored too much in the past and thought it would be interesting. It came about because it was going to deal with more of the conspiratorial themes and such, that a C/A/T album previously did. Where as C/A/T, its not going to have that same theme, it’s going to be more introspective stuff about my personal life, things I’ve been going through relationships, feelings stuff like that.
SL. Can you tell us about the new Disclosure album which is being released shortly?
B. We’ve got a couple of tracks up on Myspace that are demos of the sound where going at with that album. We don’t have it 100 % completed, and were still not sure how its going to turn out. But it should be out by mid year I’m hoping
