The Melbourne cyberpunk act SIRUS make a welcome return with a brand new single and promo video, “Save And Suffocate”, out to coincide with their appearance at Sheffield’s Resistanz Festival this Easter.

“Save And Suffocate”, out via the DWA label, finds the Australian trio of Josh, Keeva and Ryan combining bass music and progressive metal into a very attractive cocktail, in the tradition of their previous singles “Full Scale Revolt” and “Singularity”.

“Save And Suffocate” will be available both digitally and in an ultra-limited black-based CD edition from April 15 on, backed with the exclusive b-side “Shoot To Kill, Think To Win”. You can pre-order the single right now from Bandcamp. CD copies can be obtained exclusively at Resistanz Festival prior to the general release date for the CD which is May 6.

The video is released today in a premiere exclusive to Side-Line and was directed and edited by the band’s Josh Rombout.

Genre/Influences: EBM.

Format: Digital, CD + download card.

Background/Info: Three years after the successful debut album “Ultranoia” , the international collective Damage Control strikes back with an album featuring ten remixes. Nine songs from “Ultranoia” have been remixed by different artists. Chris Peterson has been again in charge of the mixing and mastering. The download card features one extra remix.

Content: The different remixes and collaborations resulted in a varied work, which remains driven by sophisticated EBM reminding me of FLA, Skinny Puppy and related bands. Remixes were accomplished by Craig Saunders, Phil Western, Gin Devo, Tom Slug, Slighter, Manufacture, Ehsan Gelsi, Sirus and Markus App (2 remixes). Some edits are pure remixes while others have been made together with Damage Control.

+ + + : “Hypernoia” is a cool addition to “Ultranoia”. I definitely prefer the ‘regular’ album, which remains a true masterpiece, but this album reveals a great remix of “Reasons” Phil Western, transposing the original song into a Trance-Body cut. I also like the “Trauma”-remix in collaboration with Markus App, which stands for intelligent EBM. “Hell’s Gate” has been also remixed in a cool and surprising Ambient edit by Ehsan Gelsi. And I also have to mention the dubby “Sirus Remix” of “Hate Crime”.

– – – : Remixes are a cool bonus to the “Ultranoia”-album, but the original songs definitely remain the best ones!

Conclusion: If you don’t know Damage Control, you better first listen to “Ultranoia” and then “Hypernoia”.

Best songs: “Reasons – Phil Western Remix”, “Trauma – Damage Control vs. Markus App Remix”, “Hell’s Gate – Ehsan Gelsi Remix”.

Rate: 7½.

Genre/Influences: EBM, industrial.

Format: Digital, CD, Vinyl.

Background/Info: “The Book Of Gates” is the second single/EP taken from the Australian formation’s last full length “Apocrypha” (2018). There’s a limited 7” vinyl format, which is only including two songs while the CD and digital edit are featuring two extra songs/remixes.

Content: The work takes off with the original edit of the song, which is characterized by a solid and harmonious twist between guitar play and electronics. The chorus has something wafting while some broken rhythms are empowering the dynamic of the song.

Remixes have been done by Sirus frontman Josh Romboaut plus Soman and Dave Inox.

+ + + : The title song is a right choice for a maxi; it’s a cool and powerful song, with a kind of Eastern tune on top. Among the remixes I like the more club-driven remix of Josh Rombout and the minimal-EBM approach of Dave Inox.

– – – : I regret there’s only one song –plus remixes, featured at this work. A real bonus would have been a new track.

Conclusion: Sirus brings a cool single/EP featuring a powerful title song plus cool remixes.

Best songs: “The Book Of Gates – Dave Inox Remix”, “Book Of Gates – Take control Mix”.

Rate: (7).

Background/Info: Driven by Josh Rombout, the Australian Sirus project strikes back after two acclaimed official albums. “Singularity” is a pure collector’s item as it’s is available as very limited 7” vinyl and as ‘business card’-CD format (limited to 36! copies). There also is another similar format featuring just the title song while this single reveals 3 cuts.

Content: The title song is an interesting hard and industrial-like electronic song with a cool, icy melodic lead. The song is characterized by harsh, enraged vocals plus female backings. Two versions of “Singularity” are available.

Next there’s a great B-side song, which is definitely different. The song is softer and featuring somewhat robotic-like vocals.

+ + + : Sirus reveals two different sides, but both songs are just great. I like the hard title song, which makes me think to a sort of ‘industrial IDM’ while “Cycleheart” is a kind of minimal B-side cut. I like this band for its ‘anarchistic’ approach just composing electronics without compromises and no limits. This is also a great collector’s item because of the cool ‘business card’-format.

– – – : There’s a kind of duality between the title song and the B-side cut, but in the end both songs are noticeable revealing a diversified single.

Conclusion: “Singularity” is a pretty cool release and without a shadow of a doubt a hot teaser to the next full length of Sirus.

Best songs: “Singularity”, “Cycleheart”.

Having almost sold out all physical copies of both their albums and both previous singles for DWA, Melbourne-based cyberpunk act Sirus have returned with the new single and video “Singularity”.

Initial physical copies come in 3 ultra-limited and ultra-innovative formats as you can see below:

single-track business card CD (“Singularity – Single Edit”): Clear plastic, printed in black, white and clear spot gloss finish

2-track transparent lathecut 7” vinyl (“Singularity – Single Edit”/ “Cycleheart”)

3-track 80mm vinyl-look mini-CD (“Singularity – Single Edit”/ “Cycleheart”/ “Singularity”): Basically looks like a miniature picture disc. As with the business card edition, printing has been done directly onto the jewelcase itself – negating any need for paper parts.

These collectibles are all already sold out on pre-order, with remaining copies available online here on the DWA Bandcamp page, so be very quick if you want one!

The video – the follow-up to the band’s massively successful “Neon Dominion” can be viewed below:

Chief editor of Side-Line – which basically means I spend my days wading through a relentless flood of press releases from labels, artists, DJs, and zealous correspondents. My job? Strip out the promo nonsense, verify what’s actually real, and decide which stories make the cut and which get tossed into the digital void. Outside the news filter bubble, I’m all in for quality sushi and helping raise funds for Ukraine’s ongoing fight against the modern-day axis of evil. Besides music I’m also an SEO and AI content flow specialist and have an interest in everything finance from stocks to crypto. There is music in everything!

Background/Info: Lawrie Bayldon (Studio-X, Cryogenic Echelon), Ayax (Ascension Ex, Cryogenic Echelon) and Gerry Hawkins are back on track unleashing the 2nd full length of Avarice In Audio. Two years ago now this Australian combo took the electro scene by surprise releasing their promising debut album “Shine & Burn”.

Content: “Apollo & Dionysus” sounds more open-minded than their debut full length, but still appears to be very challenging. Avarice In Audio experiments with solid techno blasts mixed with harder and industrial-minded sound treatments. The songs are powerful and reveal multiple sound manipulations. There’s a perfect balance between the different influences, but in the end I would say it clearly sounds more into techno and dance music instead of industrial.

The harder industrial treatments make it all more underground-like and darker while the beating kick will bring dancefloors on fire. There’s certain bombast running through the songs while a few other cuts are softer and more into a kind of reverie. Most of the vocals are rather powerful and passionate.

One of the main particularities of the work is the contribution of guest artists like Damasius Venys (Mondträume) and Mr. Kitty performing guest vocals, Chris Anderson and Mixe1. The last song of the regular album is an interesting new version of “The Cassandra Complex”, which was originally released on their debut album.

The 2nd disc features 13 remixes by an interesting list of artists. Studio-X, iVardensphere, Nitro/Noise, Alter Der Ruine, Panic Lift, Ludovico Technique, Biomechanical, Freakangel, Terrolokaust, Die Sektor, Sirus and less familiar [Snuff] and Kult Of Red Pyramid clearly are a nice selection of promising remixes. Speaking for myself I have a preference for the remixing skills of iVardensphere, Alter Der Ruine and Sirus.

+ + + : This album reveals a great progression in sound and global production featuring impressive sound manipulations. The industrial-dance style is powerful and carried by passionate vocals. The extra disc features a nice cocktail of cool remixes.

– – – : The techno input is cool, but I regret some cheaper techno blasts, which are a bit cliché. The softer tracks aren’t the most convincing ones. I’m also missing a real great hit.

Conclusion: “Apollo & Dionysus” is an accessible and well-crafted work although not exactly the most evident release to please a darker audience, which is not always that wild of techno experiments. This work is not for purists, but for open-minded souls in search of great, danceable vibes.

Best songs: “World Without Song feat. Chris Anderson”, “Anthracite Nights”, “Juvenile Desires feat. Mr. Kitty” + “Her Fire – iVardensphere Remix”, “
Crystal Tears – Alter Der Ruine Remix”, “The Cassandra Complex – Sirus Remix”.

Rate: (7½).

In 2014 the Australian act Avarice In Audio released the “Shine & Burn” album showcasing the band’s mix of dark electronics and EDM infused influences combined with frontwoman Jade’s and Gerry’s vocals. Side-Line was already quite charmed by the band, hence why they also feature on our “Face The Beat : Session 3” free download compilation.

Out now is the band’s second album “Apollo & Dionysus”, this time also featuring guest vocals by Mondträume and Mr Kitty adding both a synth pop and techno touch to the Avarice In Audio material.

The album is released now as a CD and 2CD boxset (available here for ordering) next to the download via Bandcamp (and other download stores).

Apollo & Dionysus (Bonus Tracks Version) by AVARICE IN AUDIO

The deluxe carton box edition holds a second disc which is actually a full track by track remix album called “Dreamers Never Prosper” featuring reworks by such fine artists as Freakangel, Die Sector, Ludovico Technique, Panic Lift, Alter Der Ruine, Ivardensphere, Kult Of Red Pyramid, Studio-X (of course!), Nitro/Noise, Snuff, Terrolokaust and Biomechanimal. The list is topped by a bonus remix by fellow Australian act Sirus.

Anno 2016 the project features founding members Gerry Hawkins and frontwoman Jade Pegg next to Lawrie Bayldon (Studio-X, Cryogenic Echelon) and Ayax (Ascension Ex, Cryogenic Echelon) who have joined most recently.

The 3rd edition of the Beat:Cancer charity compilation – which is being released in a couple of months – is available now for pre-order from the Analogue Trash label.

The idea behind the Beat:Cancer compilation series and concerts started in 2012 as the founder Mark Haigh’s reaction to the loss of a friend and colleague to lymphoma. Initially envisioned as a 7-track digital EP, word quickly spread with artists and labels from across the electronic music spectrum pledging their support. Beat:Cancer has since released two successful fundraising CDs, hosted four fundraising concerts and a number of clubbing events around the UK, raising around £6000 in 3 years to help Cancer Research UK fund research into screening, treatment and cures for cancer.

This year with the support of label partners Analogue Trash, they will not only return to their live endeavours but will be releasing the third volume in their well-received compilations series. The compilation will be officially released on Friday 25th of March at the Resistanz Festival in Sheffield, with pre-orders going live from today, Monday 1 February, onwards via the Analogue Trash label shop.

Beat:Cancer v3 will feature 3 discs worth of exclusive and unreleased tracks from new and emerging artists and established favourites of the alternative and electronic music scene: 45 of them in total including ESA, Freakangel, Dirty K, Ruinizer, SIRUS, Atomzero, Syd.31, … The CD edition will be packaged in a deluxe 8 panel digipak, with artwork from designer Vlad McNeally. The album will be available as well via all good digital stores and streaming services. There are also exclusive pre-order bundles available (incl. cassettes, t-shirts, …) with some lovely bonuses for early bird supporters:

The first 25 orders will be entered into a draw to win a prize bundle containing a selection of Beat:Cancer merchandise and a pair of Beat:Cancer LIVE tickets.

The first 30 pre-orders will receive a free bracelet

The first 100 will be entered into a further draw to win one of 3 pairs of tickets to a Beat:Cancer LIVE event in 2016.

Supporters are also invited to make a donation in return for a dedication on all 500 copies of the CD artwork by e-mailing the Beat:Cancer team at contact@beatcancer.info. Says Mark Haigh who coordinates the whole: “In the past, sponsors have used this opportunity to remember and celebrate loved ones, friends or colleagues who have been lost to the disease, are currently fighting it or have been lucky enough to beat cancer themselves.”

Full details, event line-ups, merch and music sales are available on the official Beat:Cancer website.

But out by mid-March will be the band’s second album “Apollo & Dionysus”, this time also featuring guest vocals by Mondträume and Mr Kitty adding both a synth pop and techno touch to the Avarice In Audio material.

Alfa Matrix already made 3 tracks available from the new album on their Bandcamp page, where you can also pre-order the HQ download of the album including a lot of bonus versions. You can stream those 3 tracks below too.

Apollo & Dionysus (Bonus Tracks Version) by AVARICE IN AUDIO

The album will be released as a CD and 2CD boxset (available here for ordering) next to the download via Bandcamp (and other download stores in the future).

This band set up and driven by the creative mind of Josh Rombout (aka DJ Sirus) deals with a fascinating and modern format of underground electro, which is hard to grasp as one particular genre.

In comparison to their debut album, Sirus hold on to similar influences, which clearly move from EBM to dark-technoid elements, but the global production became more sophisticated. The main characteristic and strength of this band is their taste to manipulate sounds while experimenting with multiple influences, which are going further than EBM and techno-minded formats.

“Satellite Empire” is a progressive-electro work on, which you will notice beautiful ethereal passages featuring the heavenly vocals of Danielle McKay, but also songs revealing elements of d’n’b (cf. “Loic”, “PRISM”), groovy passages (cf. “Neon Dominion”) and a rather cinematographic final cut (cf. “Surfacing”). The work is complex and like in constant movement, revisiting familiar electro elements and mixing different influences with each other.

Today it’s hard and nearly impossible to speak about an ‘innovating’ band, but I like the way Sirus tries to strive for something different. I rather dare to speak about a progressive electro release, but the most important aspect is for sure that there are great songs featured on it.

I’m referring to a kind of sound intelligence emerging from “Surveillance State”, which appears to be the ultimate offspring between EBM, dark-electro and trance-techno music. I already mentioned the somewhat d’n’b driven “PRISM”, which also reminds me of the complexity and genius of Frontline Assembly. But the most surprising song and still my absolute favorite is called “We Have The Technology”. This track is a heavenly fusion between terrific, progressive electro-body structures and the heavenly ethereal female vocals. It’s not exactly a dreamy song, but a hard and transcendental piece of music. The dreamy side is featured on the opening cut “Ministries Of Truth”, which is a kind of magic intro cut.

A last cut I want to mention is the groovy-like “Neon Dominion” where I especially enjoyed the complementary male- and female vocals, which sound a bit like ‘the beauty and the beast’.

Last, but not least I have to mention that the CD format features 3 extra songs, which are remixes by iVardensphere, Grendel and Aesthetic Perfection.

Conclusion: Sirus definitely belongs to this restricted category of ‘progressive’ electro-underground bands trying to innovate and explore new paths. “Satellite Empire” is a work with real big potential!

Best songs: “We Have The Technology”, “The People We’ve Lost”, “Neon Dominion”, “Surveillance State”, “LOIC”, “PRISM”.

Content: “Nations Reborn” was simultaneously released with the re-issue of the “As Nations Decay”-album featuring an extra disc with an impressive load of remixes. The original album was released in 2013 and now gets a new boost with the extra remixes.

Notice by the way that the digital release features 3 extra songs. The main attraction of this album is the 9 previously unreleased remixes by mainly label mates. Other famous and recognized formations like Noisuf-X, Chainreactor and Alien Vampires contributed to this remix orgy as well.

I’m not a big fan of albums filled with remixes, but “Nations Reborn” is the exception to the rule. I think it’s mainly due to the great original songs by BlakOPz and the fine selection of talented formations. The remixers all tried to inject a personal note to the original song, which resulted in a fascinating listening.

The concept of this release (set up by the label) also consists of remixing all of the original songs of the album. The only exception at “Nations Reborn” is the absence of 2 songs that were composed together with another band (Sleetgrout and Nitro/Noise).

A few remixes like the ones by Aesthetic Perfection, Cryogenic Echelon and Alter Der Ruine were already previously released as bonus songs on the album. I have to admit that both remixes by Aesthetic Perfection and Cryogenic Echelon belong to the ultimate list of favorites.

But I also have to recommend the powerful astral vibes of the “#culturedelete”-remix by Cyferdyne. Another real smasher has been accomplished by Chainreactor, injecting a huge and irresistible ‘00ntz’ doses to “Turn Key Tyranny”.

Noisuf-X surprised me with a less powerful, yet intelligent electro-industrial remix of “Behind The Curtain”. “Business As Usual” has been remixed a rather enraged style by Cygnosic. Last, but not least I’ll end with the debut song of the album entitled “The Beginning”, which has been transformed by Sirus into a violent and somewhat hard-core version.

Ruinizer added their complex touch to “Thick As Thieves” while I globally expected a bit more out of the remixes by Alien Vampires and ESA”.

Conclusion: “Nations Reborn” stands for a rather ‘hard’ work featuring multiple great remixes, which are mainly dealing with EBM-related music. It might have been cool and really innovative to discover remixes by bands from totally different music genres, but that’s just my personal taste.

Best songs: “#culturedelete – Cyferdyne Remix”, “Before The Rust – Cryogenic Echelon Remix”, “As Nations Decay – Aesthetic Perfection Remix”, “Turn Key Tyranny- (Chainreactor Remix”.

They afterwards joined DWA releasing a few more albums and EP’s.

The digital edit of “Mix The Poison Up” and the CD-re-release of the album “Spit The Poison Out” (featuring the bonus CD “Mix The Poison Up”) got simultaneously released featuring 8 new remixes by iVardensphere, Phosgore, C-Lekktor, Retrogramme, Seraphim System, ESA, Ruinizer and Chainreactor.

The CD edit of “Mix The Poison Up” features 12 remixes while the digital version features a total amount of 15 remixes. It’s all a bit confusing when you realize that Vendetta Music released “Spit The Poison Out” for the American scene in 2013 with 3 remixes, but accomplished by other bands. The 3 extra remixes on the new digital edition originally appeared at the CD format of “Mix The Poison Up” released by Deathwatch Asia in 2013.

Terrolokaust got remixed by interesting names unleashing a quite diversified result. Rotersand remains a ‘Master’ when it comes to accomplish a remix and it’s one of the most noticeable bands. The remix of “Reversing In Circles” is a noticeable song.

My favorite remixes are those of Chainreactor, FGFC820, Phosgore, C-Lekktor, Modulate and ESA. “Pointless” was remixed by Chainreactor in a rather expected electro-industrial-rave featuring the harsh vocals of Javi Sasgittar on top. A somewhat similar remix is the one of “Two-Faced Leader” transposed by Phosgore into another great industrial-rave piece, which sounds hard and merciless.

FGFC820 remixed “The Way It Must Be” in a dark-EBM style, which is really boosting and reminding me a bit of early Inertia. C-Lekktor is once more convincing me that this project is slowly becoming one of the best dark-electro bands of the past few years. The remix of “Reversing In Circles” got a hard adrenaline injection, which is a real dancefloor killer.

Modulate did a great job as well remixing “The Way It Must Be” (a remix that was originally released as B-side of a 7″ vinyl single taken from the album) and I here especially want to mention the cool dark sequences running through the song.

Last, but not least there’s a more rough and industrial-orientated remix of “Addicted” by ESA.

Other remixes from bands like iVardensphere, Nitro/Noise, Sirus, Retrogramme, Ruinizer and Blackopz are not bad at all, but they can’t really compete with the aforementioned remixes.

Conclusion: This digital edition of “Mix The Poison Up” is interesting for all the fans of the band. There’s a great diversity in influences and an impressive selection of talented and established dark-electro acts.

Best songs: “Two-Faced Leader – Phosgore Remix”, “The Way It Must Be – Modulate Remix”, “Pointless – Chainreactor Remix”, “Reversing In Circles – C-Lekktor Remix”, “The Way It Must Be – FGFC820 Remix”.
