Background/Info: This is the sixth album by Sans-Fin and the third one released on Hands. The name of the project, title of the album (translated as “withered leaves” in English) and songs are still all in French although this is a German project.

Content: Sans-Fin has used the fans to encounter a harsh, Industrial-like and Techno-infused sound. It’s still part of “Feuilles Fanées” but the global feeling is that this work is even harder and takes in good-old Rhythmic-Industrial inspiration. This is hard-banging music for underground dance floors which comes to its end by a remix of Greyhound.

+ + + : Sans-Fin is an interesting project from the Hands roster. There’s this contemporary and I should dare to say trendy heavy, perverted, Techno-Industrial sound but still good-old Rhythmic-Industrial reminding the early years of the label. “Survol” is the perfect illustration of this imaginary sonic bridge between past and present; a hard-pumping composition carried by an electronic sequence. The remix of “Être Seul” by Greyhound is a remarkable apotheosis to this furious sonic violence.

– – – : The tracks are a bit predictable after a while. I’m missing a bit more variation and that’s probably why I prefer the previous work “La Fin De La Nuit”.

Conclusion: Get ready for a sonic lobotomy which comes as an ambassador of the harshest, contemporary, projects from the Hands roster.

Best songs: “Survol”, “Faire Le Deuil”, “Mademoiselle”, “Être Seul – Greyhound Remix”.

Background/Info: “Forms Of Hands” became a familiar compilation from the Dortmunder (Germany) based label Hands. Every year the label organizes a ‘family-festival’ featuring a list of bands from their roster. After the festival we always get a fine selection of bands which played at the festival featuring exclusive tracks for the compilation. Fourteen projects have been selected for 22-edition.

Artists: Strobo Lolita, Shrouds, Cervello Elettronico, MS Gentur, Greyhound, Nullvektor, Orphx, Sans-Fin, Phasenmensch + Antoine Saint-Martin, Monya, 16Pad Noise Terrorist, Maschinenkrieger KR52, Mono No Aware, Ah Cama-Sotz. 

Content: The compilation reveals familiar names featuring renowned projects from the ‘wider Industrial fields’ next to upcoming talents. But the sampler is also an opportunity to discover the sound of Hands; from good-old Rhythmic-Noise and harsh Industrial music mixed with extra influences like D’N’B and techno to more sophisticated compositions touching ground with IDM.

+ + + : Hands remains one of the ‘oldest’ and still leading labels from the Industrial fields. Old servants like Ah Cama-Sotz, Greyhound and Mono No Aware but also Maschinenkrieger KR52, MS Gentur, Nullvektor, 16Pad Noise Terrorist and the intelligent Industrial sound of Cervelllo Elettronico and Orphx will bring you power and joy. My personal favorites are Ah Cama-Sotz for its Technoid orientation revealing an artist who remains in constant progress and Maschinekrieger KR52 for its surprising Minimal/Techno-Industrial cut. Orphx remains another great and visionary formation revealing a Techno/EBM cut with Industrial elements on top. Other attention grabbers are Sans-Fin with a Technoid approach as well but also harsher cuts from Shrouds, Greyhound and the more Techno-Industrial MS Gentur. This compilation remains a must-have for all the exclusive cuts.

– – – : Still a great compilation, but from a very personal point of view not my favorite one from the impressive list which started in 2001.

Conclusion: This label compilation remains a great addition and souvenir to the festival night. Industrial rules!

Background/Info: This is already the 21st edit of the famous label sampler “Forms Of Hands”. The yearly compilation features fourteen artists from the label roster.

Artists: Sans-Fin, Phasenmensch, Templer, Supersimmetria, Hysteresis, S.K.E.T., Monolith, Trackologists, Talvekoidik, Sylvgheist Maëlström, 13TH Monkey, Last Days Of S.E.X., Proyecto Mirage, Winterkälte. 

Content: This new edit brings us hard and brain-damaging Industrial sounds plus noises; now carried by Dark-Techno influences and next overloaded by harsh Rhythmic-Noise loops.

+ + + : The main strength of the compilation -next to the impressive selection of artists, is the feature of exclusive tracks. This is also one of the hardest edits in years. I’ve been mainly impressed by the pumping Industrial sound treatments and Rhythmic-Noise from Templer, the deep, resonating, dark, loops from Monolith with a great and mysterious piano-like tune on top, the Industrial-Techno revolution made by 13TH Monkey and the heavy Electro-Industrial cut by Proyecto Mirage -the single cut with vocal lines. I also have to mention the resurrection of Trackologists and label flag holder Winterkälte to close this compilation.

– – – : Be careful of brain damage if you’re not familiar with heavy Industrial & Noise sounds.

Conclusion: Hands has collected a fine selection of true sonic sound terrorists once more confirming the leading status of the label. 

Best bands: Templer, Monolith, Proyecto Mirage, 13TH Monkey, Winterkälte, Supersimmetria, Sylvgheist Maëlström.

Background/Info: “La Fin De La Nuit” (translated “The End Of The Night”) is the fifth full length album by Leipzig based project Sans-Fin. This German solo-project is driven by DJ Hells who released his second album on Hands.

Content: The previous work sounded to me as an interesting exposure of Ambient and rhythm. The new songs moved a step further and became harder, infused by Dark-Techno and mind-blowing Industrial rhythms. Quite progressively the Dark-Techno influences are coming through while icy sequences accentuate the obscure side of the composition. A few softer passages sound like they are connected with the previous, ambient-driven work of the artist. The last track is a heavy, club-driven remix of the debut song by Blac Kolor.

+ + + : The previous album was interesting, but this one reveals mind-blowing passages. The sound of Sans-Fin has been injected with a naughty sonic blast called Dark-Techno and mixed with heavy Industrial rhythms and other elements. I like this approach and especially the icy sequences. “Courant Continu” and “Se Ruiner” both are overwhelming pieces revealing the true potential of the project. The songs have been accomplished with great sound treatments. I also have to mention the amazing and intelligent remix of “Conduire” by label mate and sound genius Blac Kolor.

– – – : Some parts are a bit repetitive, but the very few cuts that couldn’t totally convince me are the softer, ambient ones.

Conclusion: “La Fin De La Nuit” reveals the best side of this project, which has found the sound formula to mix Industrial and Dark-Techno.

Best songs: “Se Ruiner”, “Courant Continu”, “Conduire – Blac Kolor Remix”, “Destruction”, “Fermé”.

Rate: 8.

Background/Info: Hands label has used to release this annual compilation, which is a look back at the “Forms Of Hands”-festival each year reassembling some of their hottest bands. Fourteen artists who contributed to the festival have been featured at this sampler.

Artists: S.K.E.T., Mono No Aware, Heimstatt Yipotash, Gatto Nero, Supersimmetria, Geistform, Winterkälte, Tomohiko Sagae, ICD-10, Katran, 16Pad Noise Terrorist, Sans-Fin, Yura Yura, Talvekoidik.

Content: Even if Hands remain one of the uncontested leading labels from the industrial music scene, industrial music has seriously evolved. The music style has been progressively, but severely contaminated by techno music, resulting in a harder, darker and underground format of industrial-techno. Most of the featured bands are clearly experimenting with techno while remaining faithful to darker influences. But a few die-hard bands or call them ‘purists’ are still into the familiar industrial format.

+ + + : If you compare early “Forms Of Hands”-compilations with this latest one, you only, but have to agree this is a label in progress. This is the new standard of industrial-music, one that will bring people to dance a frenetic way till reaching a state of trance. From the minimal-like techno format of Supersimmetria to pure techno by Gatto Nero to an experimental format by Mono No Aware to the sound intelligence of Geistform, the techno heads will be ravished. Sans-Fin, Yura Yura and even Tomohiko Sagae bring us a more ‘classical’ industrial style.

– – – : I sometimes ask myself what early Hands fans would think about this industrial (R)evolution! I’m not sure it will please all fans.

Conclusion: This is the kind of sampler simply confirming each year again that the label from Dortmund remains ‘the’ absolute reference in this kind of music!

Background/Info: Sans-Fin is taken from the French language, but the project is from Leipzig (Germany). Driven by DJ Hells, Sans-Fin previously released three albums on Raumklang Music. They now joined the established industrial Hands label, which might be seen as a consecration for this project.

Content: “Etat De L’Art” is not exactly the most ‘classical’ release you might expect to discover on Hands. The work is clearly driven by two important elements: rhythmic and ambient spheres. The repetitive cadence has something technoid while the electronics are pretty space-like. There’s something cinematographic running through this work, but there are also some harder parts revealing aggressive sequences. Both last cuts are remixes by _Hottek and 16Pad Noise Terrorist.

+ + + : Hands is not repeating itself and is daring to innovate. “Etat De L’Art” has something of a challenge and can even convince me when it becomes a bit trance-like (cf. “Pompe A Engrenages”) or simply more aggressive thanks to the remix of _Hottek. Both remixes add some diversity to the work.

– – – : The sound formula is interesting, but Sans-Fin has no limits when it comes to abuse of this formula. So the tracks become pretty similar and without absolute highlights.

Conclusion: Hands is without a shadow of a doubt one of my personal favorite labels from the electro/industrial underground scene, but this album must be one of the first that couldn’t really convince me!

Best songs: “Pompe A Engranages”, “Tuyau De Guidage –     _Hottek Remix”, “Cadencer Son Pas – 16Pad Noise Terrorist Remix”.
